French Literature V
Instance: 2004/2005 - 1S
Cycles of Study/Courses
Objectives
Given the semester’s restricted duration, selections from the broad panorama of 16th- and 17th-century French literature are limited and necessarily introductory and disputable. The programme, through Rabelais, will seek to integrate the evolution of the narrative within the socio-political assumptions of Renaissance France that will, in time, lead to a flourishing production in drama. They are here put into perspective through the study of Corneille and Molière, based on a canonical renewal that has been explored in recent research in French Literature of the Grand Siècle. Therefore, these are the texts and thematic references that support them:
Program
1. François Rabelais, Gargantua: the thelemic apogee.
2. Pierre Corneille, L`Illusion Comique: reality and dreams mixed up.
3. Molière, Les Amants Magnifiques: the freedom to ‘aimer l`aimable’.
