Belinda Maia was an Associate Professor at the University of Porto, where she taught from 1974 till 2015. From 2007-2015, she was Director of the Master's in Translation and Language Services, a member the EMT - European Master's in Translation Network, of which she was a member of the Board between 2009-14. She was the director of the PhD programme in Human Language Technologies, the PhD programme in Translation from 2010 till 2014, when these courses were absorbed into the PhD programme in Language Sciences.

During her time at the UP she taught Research Methodology, Computational Linguistics, Forensic Linguistics, Terminology and Lexicography, Technical Communication, Translator Training Methodology, as well as translation theory, information technology for translation, translation, Contrastive Linguistics, and English Linguistics. Her research interests, and those of the students whose theses she still supervises, are related to these subjects, several of which imply cooperation with other departments and faculties. Her PhD thesis (1994) was a corpus based study of the lexicon of Emotion in English and Portuguese.

She has published widely on several of the subjects listed above and has a particularly strong interest in Corpus Linguistics and Terminology, areas that have led to interesting interdisciplinary and interdepartmental cooperation. From 2002-2008 she was in charge of the University of Porto branch of the Linguateca project, and helped pioneer the creation and use of the Corpografo, a suite of tools for the creation and analysis of corpora and the related terminology databases. She was also actively involved in several ERASMUS and ERASMUS MUNDUS teacher and student mobility programmes.

She is also a member of the Scientific Committees of the conferences organized by APL – Associação Portuguesa de Linguística, EPIA – Portuguese Conference on Artificial Intelligence, IAFL – International Association of Forensic Linguists, and PROPOR – International Conference on Computational Processing of the Portuguese Language.
