Description: | The Master's in Teaching Portuguese in the 3rd Cycle of Basic Education and Secondary Education is designed to train Portuguese teachers for the levels of education mentioned, corresponding to recruitment group 300. The professional training obtained through this course provides training for professional activities directly and/or indirectly related to the teaching of Portuguese, such as the production of teaching materials, the creation of courses, among others. |
Aims
1. Devellopment of the awareness of professional conduct that will guide the career of student
2. Reinforcement in the student awareness of the educational value of teaching and learning of Portuguese as a Second Language, in the double instrumental and cultural strand.
3. Development of the students’ appetite for lifelong learning and self-learning by managing and rationalizing independent study and research, which shall guide their future teaching career.
4. Acquisiton of a specific theoretical and methodological framework of Foreign Language Teaching/Didactics, in order to raise awareness on the ways and reasons of teaching practices peculiar to teaching/learning Portuguese as a Second Language.
I. General Aims: 1. To discuss the issue of the formative-cognitive and socio-affective values associated to teaching the Mother Language; 2. To understand the relationship between mother language teaching and teaching-learning of other curricular and non-curricular subjects; 3. To develop, select and adapt scientific referential knowledge to the needs, stages and paces of the students? learning process; 4. To become acquainted with effective, diversified teaching methods and strategies, adjusted to mother language teaching; 5. To become acquainted with pedagogical-didactic tools and available resources and use them in real circumstances. II. Specific Aims: 1. To prepare planning projects, didactical units and Portuguese Language and Portuguese Literature classes with a view to achieving a competent management of the Programmes and other official documents, at different levels and school years; 2. To prepare materials adapted to the mother language teaching; 3. To prepare assessment tools for different aspects of the subject.
1. Deepen grammar knowledge and reflect on how to teach it.
2. Promote knowledge about grammar teaching methodologies that are appropriate to elementary and secondary education levels.
3. Develop the competence to teach grammar using grammar laboratories.
1. To describe and compare some of the main theories on cognitive, moral, and psychosocial development, with relevance for education and teaching.
2. To define the concept of learning and indicate the generic characteristics of the main psychological approaches to this topic.
3. To compare and contrast some of the most important theories related to intelligence and learning styles.
4. To identify theoretically and empirically grounded strategies and procedures that teachers can adopt to promote more efficient learning on the part of students.
5. To compare and contrast the main aspects of some of the most important theories on motivation.
6. To describe the appropriate principles for classroom management that can prevent misbehavior and promote a learning environment.
7. Describe the principles that currently underlie inclusive education that seeks to respond to the educational needs of children and adolescents throughout their school path.
The aim of this Seminar is to provide students with knowledge in two areas: analysis of theories and methods of study related to language variation and change, and their application to the specific study field of the Portuguese Language; observation of past synchronicities and of evolution phenomena in progress.
The students will develop the capacity to recognise analysis of linguistic variation theories and study methods; its application in the specific field of the history of the Portuguese language in its different varieties. The students will also know the connections between the language specificity and its historical evolution.

1. To analyse problems of ethics in teaching and education.
2. To understand and discuss the main theories of normative ethics: consequentialism, deontology, and virtues.
3. To apply the various theories of normative ethics to practical cases related to education and teaching, and to take a reasoned position on ethical dilemmas of school and educational contexts.
4. To develop skills of analysis and critical reflection around the problems of ethics and education.
5. To conceptualize ethical principles in inclusive education.
The Education Policies and Curriculum course, by focusing on the themes of public policy, the architecture of the central administration and school organizations, the curriculum prescribed, theorized and real, the teaching professionalism, and the status of the student, among others, in the context of the Portuguese education system, aims to provide a space for critical reflection and scientific and technical-pedagogical systematization of the activity of future teachers.
The teaching profession needs a solid theoretical basis that allows it to investigate various aspects of the educational field, in which remain plural black boxes.
The course aims, from a socio-historical approach, to deepen the cognitive capacity that many of the contemporary educational problems require for their resolution and technical-professional, social, cultural, and political sustainability from the perspective of the teacher's activity.
The objectives of the subject are:
- Analyze the process of political construction of contemporary educational systems.
- To understand the diversity of models that influence the school administration and, in particular, in the organizational morphology of public schools in Portugal.
- Analyze the diversity of guidelines in the field of curriculum theory and development and its impact on teaching practice.
- Problematize the meaning of evaluation as an integrated and integrative feature in the curriculum development process.
- Identify the characteristics of teaching professionalism from its pedagogical, technical, ethical, school, and social implications.
- Debate the status of students in the framework of liquid modernity.
To develop students’ critical reasoning so that they can attain better skills as teachers of Portuguese, based on the topics dealt with during the seminar sessions.
The students should be able to:
- Deepen their scientific and pedagogical competences;
- Develop their investigative attitudes in order to proportion a continuous questioning and reformulation of teaching practices and their underlying theoretical foundations;
- Rethink, in a systematic and continuous manner, educational phenomena in general;
- Plan teaching units, classes and other activities;
- Prepare original materials;
- Critically observe lessons from mentors and colleagues;
- Critically evaluate their classes and those of other colleagues;
The current syllabus, part of a teacher training course, aims at providing students with solid knowledge of Portuguese literature, taking into consideration the syllabi adopted in the 3rd cycle of basic and secondary schooling, in order to fully prepare them in the respective teaching field. Aiming at including essential aspects of Portuguese literature, the syllabus selects a set of topics, problematizing the corresponding theoretical contexts and establishing a historical and cultural setting to enable students to consolidate the knowledge acquired during undergraduate training, at the same time as it allows the development of the ability to identify and contextualize a topic, an author, a work.
This programme, which is included in a cycle of studies for teachers training, provides students with a good knowledge of the Portuguese culture, according to the programmes adopted in 3rd cycle of elementary school and in high school, as a way to prepare students for their respective teaching area.
