Objectives

Since this subject is the first of four semestral subjects on Literature from Portuguese-speaking African countries, it is intended that students come to master knowledge of:
- the overall context which gave rise to the emergence of the “literary phenomenon” in Portuguese-speaking countries;
- the overview of Angolan Literature, from its genesis to the Generation of the “Culture”, through the analysis of and/or reference to texts by the most significant writers.

Program

I - General issues concerning African Literatures.
1. Brief historical contextualization of the Portuguese presence in black Africa
2. General introduction to Portuguese-speaking African cultures.
3. The issue of Portuguese Language in the African "space".
4. Exotic Literature, Colonial Literature and African Literatures.
5. Ethic-aesthetical Anglophone and Francophone movements: literary African-Americanism, “negritude” and “African personality”
6. Introduction to the issues of continentality and insularity of Portuguese-speaking literature.

II – Angolan Literature: from its origins to the Generation of the “Cultura” (Culture).
1. The Generation of the “Imprensa Livre” (Free Press) and the Generation of the “Luz e Crença” (Light and Faith)
