Objectives

Within the range of undergraduate degrees based upon languages derived from Latin, this subject aims to provide students with a thorough grounding of the fundamental structures of Latin (to be dealt with in depth during the semesters that follow), which will serve as tools for a better understanding of the structures of the languages that derive from it. Students taking Germanic languages are also expected to extend their vocabulary, since Latin has greatly influenced the English and German lexicon.

0. Preliminary considerations.
0.1. The importance of Latin for the learning and teaching of Portuguese.
0.2. The recovered pronunciation of Latin.
0.3. Cases and their functions.
0.4. Notions of root, theme, inflection and characteristic.

1. Morphology
1.1. Nominal inflection:
1.1.1. Nouns
1.1.2. Adjectives.
1.1.3. Possessive, personal, demonstrative, relative, interrogative and indefinite pronouns
1.2. The verbal inflection
1.2.1. The Infectum (Indicative and Imperative mode; active and passive voice).
1.2.2. Nominal forms: infinitive and present participle.

2. Syntax
2.1. Coordination and subordination:
2.1.1. Coordinate clauses: copulative, adversative, and disjunctive.
2.1.2. Subordinate clauses (indicative)
2.1.2.1. Circumstantial: temporal and causal clauses.
2.1.2.2. Relative and comparative.
2.2. Interrogative direct clause
2.3. Circumstantial complements and agent of passive constructions.
