French

Objectives

French B1.1 aims to lead students to an intermediate level between A2 and B1 as defined in the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) for Languages. In addition, the aim will be to encourage students' autonomy by getting them to think about recurring errors and strategies they can use to correct and avoid them.

Learning outcomes and competences

By the end of the semester students should be able to:

  • understand the main points of authentic audio and audio-visual documents in which speakers express themselves clearly in standard language in everyday situations (work, school, leisure, etc.);
  • read and understand descriptive, narrative and explanation texts;
  • express themselves orally, with or without preparation, on topics discussed in class or in everyday situations;
  • write short descriptive, narrative and explanatory texts
  • Students should also have acquired geographical and cultural information on France and the French speaking countries.

Working method

Presencial

Pre-requirements (prior knowledge) and co-requirements (common knowledge)

If necessary, a level at the beginning of the semester will help both student and teacher to decide about the enrolment in the appropriate level (A1 or B1.1).

Program

1) Development of oral and communicative skills:

  • Listening comprehension of short authentic documents
  • Correction of pronunciation errors leading to misinterpretation
  • Expressive reading
  • Prepared and spontaneous role plays
  • Oral presentation to be prepared and presented in groups
  • Regular classroom exercises

2) Consolidation and extension of grammatical skills

  • Review of A1 and A2 level grammatical contents
  • Simple and complex relative pronouns
  • indicative tenses:  Plus-que-parfait, Present (revision) and past conditional, simple future
  • Storytelling in the past: practice in the use of indicative mood, personal pronouns, determiners and negation
  • Passive voice
  • Present subjunctive
  • Hypothesis and condition
  • Cause and consequence

3) Reading comprehension of documents on current social issues

4) Production of descriptive, narrative and explanation texts to use or reuse the lexicon and grammar points studied

5) Reading a short story in French and giving a group presentation

6) Reflection on recurrent errors and definition of strategies to improve oral and written production

Eligibility for exams

Students are required to attend 75% of classes. Exceptions according to FLUP regulations.

Calculation formula of final grade

1. Distributed evaluation without final exam ("Epoca Normal"):

Participation: 10% (minimum 75% attendance and 75% of the tasks proposed in class and at home)
Written test: 55% (written comprehension: 10%; language structures: 20%; written production: 25%).
[Note: minimum 10/20 for SL and PE to be able to sit for the oral exam]
Oral comprehension: 10%
Individual oral test (continuous production and interaction): 25%.
A passing mark of 8/20 is required for SL, PE and PO.

2. "Epoca de Recurso" and "Época Especial":

Written exam: 55% (the same as the written test)
[Note: minimum 10/20 to be able to sit for the oral exam]
Oral exam: 45% (oral comprehension 10%, continuous production and interaction 35%)
A passing mark of 8/20 is required for for SL, PE and PO.

3. "Epoca de Recurso" for students who have failed the individual oral test (Distributed evaluation)

Students who have at least 11/20 in the written test will be able to retake only the individual oral test. The calculation formula of final grade is the same as for the "normal" session and a passing mark of 8/20 for the oral test is still required.

Special assessment (TE, DA, ...)

Students with special status are asked to contact the teacher no later than three weeks after the start of the course to define the assessment components appropriate to each case. After this period, only calculation formula number 3 ("Época de Recurso" and "Época Especial") will apply.

Classification improvement

At the "Recurso" session, students who have passed in distributed evaluation may improve two of the following three assessment components: language structures, written production and oral production. The calculation formula is the same as for distributed evaluation.
