Objectives
To reflect on the variation phenomenon as an inherent property of natural languages; to describe some aspects of linguistic variation in European Portuguese at various levels; to compare European Portuguese with the Portuguese spoken in Brazil, Angola, Mozambique, and São Tomé and Príncipe.
Learning outcomes and competences
At the end of the curricular unit, students should: understand variation as an inherent property of natural languages; describe some aspects of linguistic variation in European Portuguese at various levels; compare European Portuguese with the Portuguese spoken in Brazil, Angola, Mozambique, and São Tomé and Príncipe at phonological, morphological, syntactic, and semantic levels.

Eligibility for exams
Attending 75% of classes, unless established otherwise by law.
Calculation formula of final grade
Two tests throughout the semester counting 50% each. Students must obtain 9,5 or more in each test. In the special cases in which the student only does final exam: 100%.

Not applicable.
Special assessment (TE, DA, ...)
In accordance with the rules in force at FLUP.
Students with special status (Article 14) will have access
to the additional periods provided for by law and a
specific attendance regime, with no other assessment model
alternative to those in force for other students.
Classification improvement
Only the exam is subjet to appeal or improvement of grades.
