Objectives
This course is designed to help students acquire a three-phase methodology that they can apply to any technical or scientific text in any area of knowledge. It also aims to help them develop their critical skills in dealing with the many available resources, in particular neural machine translation and chatbots.
Learning outcomes and competences
The following learning outcomes are expected to be achieved:
1. familiarity with the different phases of a professional translation project;
2. improved ability to select translation strategies and solutions, and to justify them using accurate metalanguage;
3. improved ability to select and make effective use of both AI-based resources (neural machine translation and chatbots) and traditional documentary, terminological and phraseological resources such as experts, search engines, dictionaries, databases, parallel corpora and mirror texts;
4. improved ability to specialise in a specific scientific or technical field;
5. improved teamwork skills;
6. awareness of the need to apply a quality assurance plan.

Advanced level in French (B2-C1) and Portuguese (C1-C2)
Program
1. Specificities of scientific and technical documents (terminology, phraseology, register, structure and style).
2. Development of research and technical skills.
3. Familiarisation with the different phases of a translation project, including revision and post-editing.
4. Promotion of teamwork and networking.

Teaching methods and learning activities
The starting point will be the analysis of some technical and scientific texts in order to identify their specificities and the challenges they present to the translator.
Students will use CAT tools to carry out translation projects in groups under the guidance of the class teacher. All students will take an active part in the joint process of analysis, enquiry, asking and answering questions, giving and taking ideas, opinions, and reasons for translation choices. Feedback will be provided on each task, and translations will be revised following the comments and suggestions of the teacher and peers.
Each student will translate a scientific or technical document treating a subject of his/her choice. This individual project work will consist of an analysis grid (provided by the teacher) duly completed, a terminology and phraseology database, a translated document, and a translation memory.
