Objectives

This course aims to study and understand the history of theatre in Portugal since it appeared up to the 18th century. Students must be able to identify the most significant moments of the history of Portuguese theatre; understand and integrate the decisive phases of this history in various contexts (social, historical, aesthetic, and political) in which they appear; acquire skills to understand some representative works of this path and their codes, texts and contexts. Students are required to develop solid and justified knowledge on the various phases of this history, consolidated in authors, works, theories and evidence of this multifaceted reality, and be able to produce a critical and reflected discourse on the theatre and dramatization in Portugal between the 16th and 18th centuries, which is crucial to understand the future directions of the theatre in Portugal.

At the end of the course, the studant shall obtain skills that will enable him to produce a critical and reflected discourse on the theatre and dramatization in Portugal between the 16th and 18th centuries, which is crucial to understand the future directions of the theatre in Portugal.

1 – In the wake of a theatre culture in Portugal. 1.1 – Liturgical theatre 1.2 – The pantomimists 1.3 – ”Cancioneiro Geral” 2 – Gil Vicente: the “father” of Portuguese theatre? 2.1 - The theatre of the court. Contexts of Vicente’s representations. 2.2 –Vicente’s genres: evolution and influence 2.1 – A Vicente school? 3 – The Portuguese theatre: native tradition and humanist influence 3.1 – Other theatre settings in the 16th and 17th centuries. Elements for a sociology of theatre. 3.2 – The theatre of the Jesuit schools 3.3 – Spanish comedy 3.2 – From the court theatre to the comedy yards. 4 – The paths of the 18th century theatre 4.1 – Theatre or theatres? 4.2 – The Spanish comedy, the puppet theatrical shows, the Italian opera … 4.3 – The theatre and the Arcadian context 4.4 – Metamorphoses in the theatre. Teaching methods and learning activities

Expository theoretical classes on the programme content, text reviews, discussions, individual support to students to develop their writing and research skills. Joint trips to the theater are foreseen to watch the staging of Vincentian or Castro plays or, alternatively, the students will watch recordings of these plays already staged, for analysis of the show and commentary.
