Objectives

To reflect on the variation phenomenon as an inherent property of natural languages; to describe some aspects of linguistic variation in European Portuguese at various levels; to compare European Portuguese with the Portuguese spoken in Brazil, Angola and Mozambique. To understand the nature of Portuguese-based creoles.

Learning outcomes and competences

 

At the end of the curricular unit, students should: understand variation as an inherent property of natural languages; describe some aspects of linguistic variation in European Portuguese at various levels; compare European Portuguese with the Portuguese spoken in Brazil, Angola and Mozambique at phonological, morphological and syntactic levels; understand the nature of creoles, specifically Portuguese-based creoles.
