Objectives

The study of political, social, religious and moral ideas of ancient Greeks, visible in some of their most important literary works, aims to deepen knowledge of the Greek matrix model of Western culture.

Learning outcomes and competences

At the end of the semester, students must be able to: 1. Situate the personalities and events of Greek history; 2. Recognise the fundamental values of Greek culture; 3. Identify and interpret the literary sources selected; 4. Present, critically, essential bibliography.

Greek Culture: 1. The Homeric poems and Hesiod: the foundations of Greek culture. 2. The Archaic period - the construction of the Greek world: polis and Pan-Hellenism. 2.1. Archaic poetry. 3. Culture and society in the Greek polis: Athens and Sparta. 4. Myth and Religion. 5. Classical theatre.
