Objectives

- To know the objectives of Prehistoric Archaeology as a scientific field.

- To understand the main stages of Human Evolution from a biological and cultural point of view.

- To understand the different livelihood strategies, systems of social organization, forms of occupation and organization of space, and the evolution of techniques during the Pleistocene (Early Prehistory).

- To assess the importance of the archaeological evidence, to know its regional variability as well as its chronological and cultural significance.

Learning outcomes and competences

It is expected that the student knows the major issues covered by Pre-history as a science.

Once this course is taught in the context of a degree in Archaeology, the student should be able to recognize and to contextualise chronologically the prehistoric archaeological remains.

0. Introduction: the background and the development of prehistoric studies in Europe.

1. The Quaternary: the paleoenvironmental framework and the chronology of Prehistory.

2. The Origin of Man:  Primate Evolution - a synthesis. From the first hominins to Homo Sapiens Sapiens.

3. The Paleolithic: the evolution of society, livelihood strategies and techniques in the context of the first Human societies. The first graves and the first artistic manifestations.
