Objectives

1/ Listening

Be able to recognise familiar words and very basic phrases concerning oneself, his/her family and immediate concrete surroundings when people speak slowly and clearly.

2/ Reading

Be able to understand familiar names, words and very simple sentences, for example
on notices and posters or in catalogues.

3/ Spoken interaction

Be able to interact in a simple way provided the other person is prepared to repeat
or rephrase things at a slower rate of speech.
Be able to ask simple questions in areas of immediate need or on very familiar topics.

4/ Spoken production

Be able to use simple phrases and sentences to describe places and people.

5/ Writing

Be able to write a short, simple postcard, for example sending holiday greetings.
Be able to fill in forms with personal details, for example entering
his/her name, nationality and address on a hotel registration form.

Learning outcomes and competences

By the end of the semester students will have developed the five communication skills defined by the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages in order to be able

(1) to understand and use familiar everyday expressions and very basic phrases;

(2) to interact in a simple way provided the other person talks slowly and clearly and is prepared to help.

Students will also have to develop their own strategies to face challenges when completing tasks and discovering Francophonie. These strategies will help them to monitor their life long learning process.

Presencial

Pre-requirements (prior knowledge) and co-requirements (common knowledge)

A level test will be carried out if necessary at the beginning of the semester so that the teacher can ensure that the student is enrolled in the corresponding level.

Program

1. Phonetics: the alphabet; pronunciation, namely diphthongs and nasals, liaison between words.

2. Grammatical skills: articles and contraction; possessive determiners; regular and irregular conjugation of the indicative and imperative present tense; introduction to the past tense ; plural nouns and agreement in gender and number between the noun and the adjective; simple negation; personal subject and tonic pronouns; interrogative form; near future tense.

3. Communicative skills: basic greeting, leave-taking and other polite conventions; introducing oneself or someone else; describing oneself and others; making or answering a phone call; expressing likes and dislikes; speaking about daily routine, and personal plans; asking and answering personal question; asking for and giving information on familiar topics; expressing agreement; locating in time and place; understanding simple written and oral texts; writing simple descriptive texts.

The reading of a book may be requested at the beginning of the semester.

Teaching methods and learning activities

Interactive and task-oriented approach.

The proposed activities aim to develop students’ skills and autonomy by completing various tasks, individually or in a group, in order to achieve results to be shared in class or on the Moodle platform. These tasks include (1) search for lexical information to be shared on the e-learning platform (glossary); (2) search for information about gastronomy and tourism (recipes, flight schedules, tourist attractions schedules and prices of admission) to be shared on the e-learning platform (forum); (3) group role-playing exercises; (4) writing short texts (post cards, self portrait and portraying others, description of daily activities); (5) oral presentation in a group about gastronomy or tourism.

Eligibility for exams

Students are required to attend 75% of classes. Exceptions according to FLUP regulations. 

Calculation formula of final grade

"Epoca Normal": 

Attendance, oral and requested work: 10% (minimum 75% attendance and 75% of the tasks proposed in class and at home) to validate the ongoing evaluation. 

Written examination: 55% (written comprehension, language structures, written production) 

(minimum 10/20 to be able to sit for the oral exam) 

Oral examination: 35% (oral comprehension, continuous production and interaction) 

The average of the written and oral exam must be equal to or greater than 10/20 to validate the semester.   

"Epoca de Recurso", "Época Especial" and Students enjoying a special status (TE, DA, etc.): 

Written exam: 50% (minimum 10/20 to be able to sit for the oral exam) 

Oral exam: 50% (comprehension, continuous production and interaction)

Classification improvement

Students wishing to improve their final result will be required to take the exams during the Recurso session. The result of the participation will not be taken into account.
