Objectives

Introduction to Classical French Literature, discussing authors, works and themes that may contribute to the identification of its dynamics.

Learning outcomes and competences

At the end of the teaching of this curricular unit, the students are expected to have acquired reading keys for an approach to classical French literature.

  1. Classical French Literature: spatiotemporal limits of the designation

    • Concepts in definition: Classic, Classicism, Modern Age, Renaissance, Baroque, French Classicism, Quarrel of the Ancient and Modern, Lights, Illuminism, Pre-Romanticism.

    • Basic periodological texts of Du Bellay, Corneille, Racine, Molière, Boileau, Fontenelle, Rivarol, Perrault. 



  2. Pedagogy and utopia in Rabelais

  3. Essais, Michel de Montaigne (critical reading of selected texts)

  4. La Princesse de Clèves

    • Authorship issues

    • Contributions to the formation of the modern novel



  5. Revisiting a classic: Juan, Molière

  6. Les aventures de Télémaque(1699), Fénelon: the 'pedagogy' of travel.

    • Politics and classical heritage.
