Objectives

The objective of this course is to offer students training in the practice of translation of scientific and technical texts according to the characteristics of the market in translation Spanish/Portuguese, with emphasis on the effective translation of texts from different scientific areas.


During the semester the students will learn how to work with and use CAT tools and have access to documentary resources, in order to be competitive when looking for internships in companies and research centers or the preparation of a translation project.

 

Learning outcomes and competences

At the end of the seminar, students will be able to:

1. Analyze the macro-structure and micro-structure of technical texts of varying degrees of specialization and scientific texts.
2.
Choose the most appropriate translation solutions according to the translated material, and the strategy to fill the needs of specific recipients, justifying their translation criteria.
3.
Evaluate the reliability of documentary, terminology and phraseological resources, as well as effectively using the translation resources.
4.
Evaluate their own work and that of others, and systematically apply a quality safety plan.
5.
Work in a team to improve the quality of the translated product and becomefamiliar with the different phases of a translation project.

Pre-requirements (prior knowledge) and co-requirements (common knowledge)

1. To master the source and target languages
2. To know the scientific concepts and and knowledge required fto translate scientific textse texts and strengthen the ability of communication written in them.
3. Teamwork with different functions.
4. Be autonomous and independent when translating
5. To analyzepragmatically the scientific discourse.
6. To incorporate quality assessment criteria in the review of scientific and technical translations.
7. To master the CAT tools for the translation of scientific and technical texts, as well as the creation of glossaries.

2. Linguistic features of scientific and technical texts.
3. CAT tools and different resources for technical and scientific translation.
4. Translation projects with a team with a view to improving the quality of the translated product.
