It is intended to outline the general framework of institutional, socio-economic and pastoral development of the Church within the Portuguese society from the Middle Ages till the present.
Students should be able to use concepts used in the religious and clerical world in a long timeline.
I: Before Portugal.
1.The spread of Christianity in the Iberian Peninsula (I-IVth century).
2. The arrival of the “barbarians” and the evolution of Christianity in Iberia (V-VIII th century).
3. The Islamic occupation and the Christian Reconquista (VIII-XIth century).
II: The Church in Portugal.
1. The construction of a Portuguese Church (XII-XVth century).
2. The Church during the Portuguese overseas expansion ( XVI-XVII th century).
3. The Portuguese Church between the Restoration and the deployment of Liberalism (XVII-XIXth century).
4. The Church and the Portuguese Constitutional Monarchy (XIXth century to 1910).
5. The Portuguese Church in contemporaneity.
Specific references on the various points of the programwill be indicated throughout the semester.
Theoretical and practical classes. Tutorial sessions on topics addressed in class. Particular emphasis will be placed on orienting students’ independent study.
