Comments from the literature

Students may give priority to other editions of the cumpulsory readings, notably in the collections of Crítica (Barcelona), Cátedara or Castalia (Madrid)

Teaching methods and learning activities

In this course students will attend theoretical-practical, interactive sessions (lectures and seminars). Classes will be taught in Portuguese, but the texts of compulsory lecture will be in spanish. Support materials will be made available as well on IS.

The required readings for this course are:

- Miguel de Cervantes"Primera Parte del ingenioso hidalgo don Quijote de La Mancha" and "La gitanilla" (in Novelas Ejemplares);

- "El arte nuevo de hacer comedias" and "Fuenteovejuna" de Lope de Vega;

-"La vida es sueño"- Calderón de la Barca;

-A selection of poems available on Sigarra.

With the main objective of acquainting students with seventeenth-century Spanish literature, with a focus on the transition between the Renaissance and Baroque, we will define the concept of "Siglo de Oro " and we shall briefly recall the main features of the Renaissance period, establishing links between the Renaissance and the Baroque, both at an aesthetic level, through different art representations (literature, painting, sculpture), and at a socio-political, economic, religious and cultural levels, encouraging interactivity among students, as these skills are part of the European culture. Next, we will explain the concept of "baroque" and its reflection in the arts of the 17th century, relating the artistic and, in particular, the literary phenomenon to the Spanish crisis of this historical period.

The second literary genre to be dealt with in this course is prose, particularly the most universal romance of Spanish Literature: Don Quijote de La Mancha of Cervantes. The Primera parte del ingenioso hidalgo don Quijote de La Mancha (compulsory reading) will be approached at a theoretical and practical level, starting from the analysis of representative excerpts.

Subsequently, we will start the study of the Baroque theatrical phenomenon: the creation of the "comedia nueva" of Lope de Vega, the "Lopesco" theatre of Tirso de Molina and the improvements of Calderón de la Barca.
We will offer comments on Fuenteovejuna, El burlador de Sevilla, and in particular La vida es sueño (compulsory reading) at a theoretical and practical level, starting from the analysis of representative excerpts.
We will proceed with an introduction to the main literary genres of the 17th century, starting with poetry: the lyric renewal of Góngora and the discussion on "Gongorina" poetry through a critical analysis of the representative poems of Góngora, Quevedo and Lope de Vega.

This methodology aims at the development of the skills mentioned in the objectives and will allow students to acquire a solid theoretical knowledge, applying it to the critical analysis of texts.
In addition, we will stimulate the active participation of students to provide them the capacity of synthesis and communication.
