Objectives

Syllabus A - for students who studied BAG or BAG-P

1. Reflect on the nature, properties and functions of verbal language.
2. Understand that language can be the focus of scientific study.
3. Relate the concepts and principles of Linguistics at the different levels of analysis considered in Basis of Grammatical Analysis and introduce new concepts.
4. Link the levels of analysis considered with different linguistic areas.
5. Reflect on dimensions of meaning and language use.
6. Encourage critical spirit and rigor.

Syllabus B - for students who did not study BAG or BAG-P

1. Reflect on the nature, properties and functions of verbal language.

2. Acquisition of accurate reflection on languages
3.To understand that languages have variation
4. To be capable of articulating acquired concepts in Basis of Grammatical Analysis with new ones in Phonology, Phonetics, Lexicon, Semantics and Pragmatics.
5. To master fundamental concepts in the new introduced areas.

Teaching methods and learning activities

Some classes consist of theoretical presentations on the topics of the syllabus and others will have practical exercises. These exercises are of a great importance as they not only test student’s knowledge but they are also used to develop students’ capability of identifying and relating problems on the different topics addressed. These tasks also help students to formulate new questions.
