Objectives

The main objectives are:
- Analysis of contemporary social realities at local, national and global environmental issues in the context of a globalized world;
- Analysis of recent theoretical and empirical developments in the fields of development and sustainability;
- Analysis of social movements and perception of environmental associations in the context of globalization, such as the relationship between social and environmental systems, in the context of social risks;
- Analysis of environmental issues in terms of representations, values and individual attitudes.

Learning outcomes and competences

The skills to be acquired are:
- Domain of the theories related to specific themes of sociological analysis on the environment.
- Affirmation of a critical and reflective culture in terms of environment, development and sustainability.
- Application of knowledge and ability to understand and solve problems in new situations, in broad contexts and multidisciplinary.

1. Brief conceptual framework: defining concepts of the theoretical problem.
2. Environment, Nature and Society: the society and the political power regarding the emerging problems.
3. New social risks and new social representations. Trends and analytical axes today.
4. The role of territory and its socio-environmental characteristics: the Portuguese case.
5. Environment, social change and environmental policies: endogeneity(s) and sustainable development. Energy, population, development, international institutions.
6. Citizenship, social movements and environmental associations.
7. Representations, values and attitudes towards the environment: the Portuguese case in a comparative perspective.

Teaching methods and learning activities

The classes have a theoretical and practical component (TP) and are complemented by specific bibliography and developed summaries and supporting materials used in class (presentation slides, text, materials produced in OT) and organization of visits and reports, and participation in conferences and seminars.
Still be held sessions Tutorial (OT), with analysis and production of texts thematic conferences and presentations on the topics.
It is held annually a conference theme and a study visit to an environmental complex (central thermo-electric, central waste treatment, etc.).

Eligibility for exams

The assessment is realized with the completion of a written exam (40%), group work, written (35%) and oral (15%), from texts concerning the synchronic and diachronic analysis. It is held to discuss these issues and trends in the light of emergency and environmental impacts on public policy. Attendance is 10% of the final weighting. All the evaluation items are mandatory.

Calculation formula of final grade

Distributed Evaluation with Final Exam: written exam (40%), group work, written (35%) and oral (15%), attendance (10%). Approval for the course has the condition that the marks obtained in the final written exam is equal to or higher than 10 and the work is equal to or greater than 8 values. Failure of this condition implies the transition to time of appeal.

Special assessment (TE, DA, ...)

Students who, according to the Guidelines of FLUP, are not covered by the normal attendance component, are required to contact the teacher at the beginning of the period of operation of the discipline, for the establishment of related evaluation of knowledge.

Classification improvement

The student may apply for improving the classification in accordance with the Rules of the Faculty Evaluation. Improving classification focuses only on the final written exam and oral if necessary. Will be considered for the calculation of the final mark, the marks obtained in the remaining components. It keeps the weight given to each of these components of evaluation and the conditions for approval for the course.

Observations

At the time of appeal it's obliged to carry out a final examination (40% of the final grade) and a recension (60% of the final grade). The approval of the course has a condition that the classification obtained in the final written exam, and oral if necessary, is equal to or higher than 10 and the written work is not less than 8 points.
