Objectives

This course is designed to help students acquire a three-phase methodology that they can apply to any technical or scientific text in any area of knowledge. It also aims to help them develop their critical skills in dealing with the many available resources. 

Learning outcomes and competences



Students who successfully complete this class will





    1. be able to analyse scientific and technical texts of various types (academic, industrial, promotional) paying special attention to the macro and micro linguistic levels (collocations, phraseology, terminology, information structure, register and style);



    1. be able to select the most appropriate general translation strategy as well as the most adequate translation solutions at the various levels of the text so as to fulfil the function of the translation according to the translation brief and the communicative situation (including to be able to adapt their translations to the specific needs and objectives of the target audience);



    1. be able to justify their translation options to potential clients by using the correct metalanguage;



    1. be able to carefully select and make effective use of the multiple resources used by professional translators: information provided by experts in different fields, the Internet, databases, CAT tools, electronic corpora, Machine Translation;



    1. be able to specialize in different areas, i.e., be autonomous learners of specialized languages, with emphasis on personal preferences and interests in a specific scientific and/or technical field;



    1. be fully familiar with all the different phases of a professional translation project;



    1. be able to work in a translation team and to network with other language service professionals with a view to achieving better translation solutions;



    1. be aware of the need to implement a quality assurance plan adapted to each translation project.

Working method

B-learning

Pre-requirements (prior knowledge) and co-requirements (common knowledge)

Proficiency in French and Portuguese; mastering of CAT tools.

Program

 

    1. To practise analysing scientific and technical texts of various types (academic and industrial) paying special attention to terminology, phraseology, register, structure and style;

 

    1. To practise research skills by familiarising students with the multiple resources used by professional translators: the Internet, databases, CAT tools, electronic corpora, and Machine Translation;

 

    1. To teach students “how to specialize”, i.e., to promote autonomous learning of specialized languages, with emphasis on personal preferences and interests in a specific scientific and/or technical field;

 

    1. To familiarize students with all the different phases of a translation project, from replying to requests for quotations, analysing the documents to be translated, distributing translation work, choosing the best tools to carry out the project, researching terminology, comparable texts, etc. to delivering the final product in a professional manner.

 

    1. To promote team work and networking with a view to achieving better translation solutions.
