Objectives

Aims: This course aims, first of all, to provide students a series of introductory references on authors, genres and concepts of the history of theatre in Portugal during the 18th and 19th centuries. Secondly, the information will also lead the student to overcome the introductory references and find in them the tools for a full review of the theatre and the history of theatre, and dramaturgy. 

Learning outcomes and competences

SKILLS: Over the semester, students must be able to: a) reflect on the concepts of “history” and “theatre” in 18th and 19th century Portugal; b)Know and/or recognise some canonical texts on Portuguese playwrights and the so-called “prevalent” genres of the contemporary period, and whenever possible, be aware of limitations of such canonicity; c)Understand the strengths and frailties of national and civilisation concepts of the history of theatre; d) assess the variety and vitality, and rhetoric and aesthetics of dramas and texts on the Portuguese theatre.

I. Histories and History of Theatre. 1.“Homo sapiens” and “Homo ludens”: pround and prejudice. 2. Theatre and Literature: from “paraliterature” to “paratheatre”? Concepts of “paradramaticidade”/“paradramaturgical activities” and “teatralidade” /“theatricalness”. 3. Theatre History: some questions about Time in Place. II. Portuguese theatre history during the 19th century: contesting Aristotle? 1. Rupture and continuity: the importance of the 18th century to understand the 19th century theatre: the national theatre and the “Volksgeist”; sense and sensibility; the efficiency and “the theory of clime”, “mimesis phantastica” and “mimesis icastica”. The project of Manuel de Figueiredo. 2. The labirynth of the “mimésis icástica”: classics and romantics. 3. The project of a national theatre and the questions of “hybridism” according to Almeida Garrett. 4. The revolution and the revolution of melodrama. The role of Parodic. 5. Some questions about “catharsis” and the social function of theatre. III. Portuguese theatre history during 20th century: rewriting Aristotle? 1. An “statical drama”. Pirandello's influence. 2. “Strangeness” and rupture; 3. “History” and “Poetry”, once again. 3. "Continuação da Comédia", of João Pedro de Andrade.
