Objectives

The study of Virgil’s poetry will consolidate and complete the linguistic knowledge acquired in previous levels. At the end of the semester, students must be able to:
- translate properly annotated literary texts;
- explain special cases of lexical formation and of semantic evolution;
- compare the linguistic structures of Latin and Portuguese;
- recognise the presence of Virgil in Portuguese literature.

Program

1. Review and strengthen the knowledge of morphology and syntax, in particular the constructions used by Virgil.
2. Historical phonetics and morphology: the study of phenomena required to grasp the Latin forms and to the study of Portuguese.
3. Stylistics: word order, the hexameter; Alexandrian and Homerian influence in Virgil’s work;
4. Translation of selected texts from Bucolics (1, 4, 5, 9 and 10) and Aeneid (parts I and IV).
