Objectives
- to problematise issues related to sources in history;
- to identify the typology of main historical sources;
- to critique historical sources;
- to provide students with the necessary tools to work in the Social and Human Sciences;
Program
1. Historians and historiography
a. What is a historian?
b. Formulating problems; selecting and critiquing the sources; processing data; writing a text.
2. Sources, information, and “facts”: from the traditional notion of “monument” and “document” to a much more encompassing definition of source.
3. How to define a historical source?
a. Conditions for production;
b. Contexts of production;
c. Representativeness.
4. Typology of main historical sources

Teaching methods and learning activities
Theoretical/practical classes will be taught with the help of visual aids, statistics and cartographic material.
Tutorial classes will be devoted to the following activities: critical approach to and discussion of the module contents; student debates moderated by the teacher; oral presentations of reports and students’ research projects; discussion of the main bibliography.

Students are admitted to exams provided that the conditions established in the Assessment Regulations are met: mandatory 75% attendance of planned classes, unless established otherwise by law. Attendance will be monitored by means of attendance records.
