Objectives
To promote some of the most important texts produced in the field of Aesthetics.
Provide students with issues, concepts and conceptual relations to understand and interpret artistic and aesthetic objects.
Motivate and develop in students an appreciation and sensibility for artistic objects, especially those produced in current times.
Encourage the students’ visual and conceptual imagination.

1. Nietzsche: the aesthetic justification of existence
The critique to Platonism and of the “aesthetic Socratics”
The birth of the tragedy. Art as the affirmation of life and creator of possibilities
Genealogy of art. Aesthetics as applied physiology
Critique of “art for art’s sake”.
2. “Kant according to Duchamp”: readings of the Kantian aesthetics in contemporaneity.
Duchamp, Warhol, Buren: questioning the “aesthetics vulgate” (A. Cauquelin). The “deceptive” objects. The antinomies of contemporary art.
3. Jean-François Lyotard: in the limits of Aesthetics.
Art as resistance. The artistic/cultural debate. Sublime and the unpresentable. Work of art and happening. The “real invisible”. Aesthetics and anaesthetic: contribution for an ontology of art.

Teaching methods and learning activities
Theory-practical classes (lectures, reading and discussion of texts and audiovisual materials).The selected texts and audiovisual materials will be discussed in class. Students are required and encouraged to participate in class, by presenting research assignments. From the beginning of March, there will be theory-practical classes and tutorials, in which students will discuss the issues already raised in the programme. Tutorials represent about 25% of the teaching time available.

Eligibility for exams
In accordance with the Assessment Regulations in force. Attendance of 75% of estimated classes, in accordance with Article 9 of the Assessment Regulations applicable to 1st Cycle Course - Licenciatura, approved by the Teaching Standards Committee on 18 July 2007.
Calculation formula of final grade
The exam mark will be rounded to the nearest whole mark in accordance with Article 5, paragraph 6 of the "Assessment Regulations applicable to 1st Cycle Course - Licenciatura, approved by the Teaching Standards Committee on 18 July 2007. Or weighted average sum of the marks obtained in the final exam and in the submitted written assignments. Assessment only with final exam (a written exam at the end of the semester). This type of assessment may be combined with research assignments, supervised and assessed by the lecturer, but students must nevertheless sit the final exam.
