Objectives

This course aims to study Portuguese literature within the timelines proposed for this undergraduate degree, following its evolution path – from end of the century to the Modernism (s) – and highlighting some key moments, based on the concept of generation, on the polarising action of literary journals and on the role of some of its collaborators.

1. The generation of the 1990s and the new literary trends
1.1. Eugénio de Castro and Camilo Pessanha (from programmatic symbolism to timeless symbolism)
2. From the “Saudosismo” [sense of longing] of Teixeira de Pascoaes to the outburst of Modernism
2.1. Strands of the first Modernism: “Orpheu”, “Portugal Futurista” and their posterity
3. The “Presença” generation and the second Modernism
3.1. José Régio and the theory of artistic expression
II. The new paths of fiction
1. Under the sign of rupture: “Húmus”, by Raul Brandão
