Objectives

In the context of undergraduate degrees based on a component of languages derived from Latin, it is intended that students master the grammar and vocabulary structures of Latin (to be strengthened in subsequent semesters) to better understand the structure of languages which it originated.

Program

1. Preliminary considerations:
- Latin in the context of Indo-European languages.
- Latin and the Romance languages.
- Latin and Portuguese.
- Brief history of the genesis of the Latin alphabet.
- The restored pronounciation of Latin.
- The cases and their functions.
- Notion of stem, theme, ending and characteristic.

2. Reading, translation and grammar, literary and cultural comments on a selection of adapted texts, provided as an anthology and organised according to the level of difficulty.

3. Grammar issues
3.1. Morphology
3.1.1. Noun inflexion: nouns, adjectives and pronouns.
3.1.2. Verbal inflexion: indicative mode: present, past continuous, present perfect (active and passive voices); imperative mode (present); noun forms: infinitive, past participle.
3.2. Syntax
3.2.1. Subordinate clauses.
3.2.2. Coordinate clauses.
3.2.3. The subordinate clause: relative; circumstantial: temporal, causal.
3.3. Main adverbials and agent in the passive.

4. Application of grammar issues to translation exercises into Latin.

5. From Latin to Portuguese: the basics of Portuguese.
