Objectives
The aim of this subject is to provide students with groundings in three areas: analysis of linguistic variation theories and methods for the study of linguistic variation; its application in the specific domain of the history of the Portuguese language; and its integration in a more generic perspective, within the scope of Romance linguistics.
Program
This programme is based on the one that has been lectured by Professor Maria Helena Paiva and by Mrs. Clara Barros during the last few years.
1. Introduction: For a general theory of linguistic change.
1.1. Range and limits of several currents of historical linguistics: from the historical-comparative method to Martinet’s diachronic structuralism.
1.2. Connections between historical linguistics and other linguistic currents:
1.2.1. The generative perspective in relation to linguistic change;
1.2.2. Incidences of Labov’s Sociolinguistics in the renewal of historical linguistics;
1.2.3. The contribution of Linguistic Pragmatics to historical linguistics.
1.3. Object and method of historical linguistics. Sources for knowledge of linguistic past. Critique of evidence.
2. From Latin to Portuguese.
2.1. Pragmatic, sociolinguistic and linguistic characterization of vernacular Latin; main phonetic and phonologic, morphologic, syntactic and lexical features that distinguish it from classical Latin.
2.2. Romanization of the Iberian Peninsula: characterization of the “Iberian block” within the scope of Romania; linguistic fragmentation of the Peninsula. Substrata and superstrata.
2.3. Linguistic individuality in the North-West of the Peninsula.
2.4. Innovating characteristics of the Northern Romance Language in contrast to the Mozarab Romance Language.
2.5. Latin and romance: Latin-Portuguese documents.
2.6. Linguistic consequences of the reconquest and its repercussions in the Portuguese dialectal panorama.
