Strategic Communication, Politics and Society

DCCI08 - ECTS

O1. To problematize and question the role of different agents in the formation of public opinion.

O2. Discuss and analyze the means and resources that power uses in democratic societies to control public opinion;

O3. Reflect and envision new models of strategic communication.

O4. Map and problematize the sibylline weight of the source of information in the construction of supposed realities;

O5. To promote critical thinking about the regulatory theory and practice of media, telecommunications, and communication.

O7. Enhance critical thinking about the conceptions of public policies for the diversity of contents and the cultural and creative industry.

Advanced Studies in Media and Journalism

DCCI09 - ECTS
Journalism as the central axis of communication and citizenship and its foundational elements. New challenges are part of social, cultural, economic and political contexts being the issue of credibility. These concepts will be dealt with in the expository classes.
Knowledge, understanding and problematizing skills to produce innovative knowledge. These competences are acquired through the equation, research and debate in class, based on theory and practical cases.
The importance of sources as a professional procedure. Innovations in the elaboration of news and correlations with the fact-checking processes. Fake-news and Fact-checking mechanisms.
Transformations brought by IT and understand how news production, consumption and credibility relationships have changed.
To develop the ability to reflect on learning processes, studies, reports, codes and research networks.
Being capable of autonomy of study and initiative, originality and integration of the topics covered.

Information management models and practices

DCCI11 - ECTS

1. To understand the epistemological integration of Information Management in the evolution of Information Science, discussing and articulating it, in its transversal dimension, with the problematics of Management in general (various contexts) and the current challenges of digital management platforms at the raising of Artificial Intelligence;

2. To know in-depth, as a result of an active collection and monographic analysis of cases, the models and practices in GI, and being theoretically and methodologically able to identify and to understand problems and situations and, also having practical or applicational sensitivity;

3. Articulate the theoretical-practical specificities of this CU with the students' thesis projects, in particular those that clearly fall within the scope of Information Science.

Paradigms and Issues in Communication and Information

DCCI01 - ECTS
  1. Identify, characterize and systematize the main paradigms that constitute the field of Communication and its dynamic relationship with Information, considering the growing impact of technological mediation;
  2. to accomplish individual and shared literature reviews and reflections on relevant topics in the field Communication, with special emphasis on technological mediation in close relationship with the info-communicational process;
  3. know the epistemological framework and the working methods and tools adopted at the SC.

Information Systems and Services

DCCI12 - ECTS

- to promote understanding, analysis and discussion about systems thinking and the various typologies of systems and their characterization;

- to promote the acquisition of knowledge, understanding and discussion on the evolution of information services over time until the present;

- to stimulate the ability to analyze and evaluate information services, namely digital ones, taking into account the needs of Information access and use.

The objectives are articulated with the teaching method followed, based largely on debates in class and carrying out assignments, seeking that students are able to:

- carry out a critical analysis of systemic theory and its application in the field of CIS;

- analyze different information systems, in their components of production and use of information

- designing models of information services, taking into account the needs of production, access and use of information;

- evaluate the efficiency of information services

Analysing and Extracting Data

DCCI03 - ECTS
  • Acquire a broad understanding of the strengths and limitations of the various methodologies for analyzing and extracting data in Social Sciences.
  • Understand the history and trajectory of the field of social computing
  • Be able to solve problems – organizing and planning work to collect and analyze large amounts of digital data.

Research Methods and Techniques

DCCI02 - ECTS Develop operational skills in the field of research methods.
Develop a reflective and critical attitude towards the use of methodological concepts and procedures.
Understand the strengths and limitations of the various research methodologies in Social Sciences, using searches of bibliographic
resources, in the databases of the repositories, as well as the use of data processing tools.
Solve problems – organize and plan research work – based on acquired knowledge leading to the development of individual work..

Thesis Project

DCCI04 - ECTS This curricular unity finishes, consolidates, systematizes and applies the knowledge obtained in the different curricular units of the 1st year of the study cycle and the acquisition of competences related to the research methodology and techniques applicable to specific themes in the field of Communication and Information Sciences, resulting in the development of the doctoral thesis project.
