Objectives

The development of the Master Thesis should take into account the following skills:
- Acquire knowledge in a particular area of Civil Engineering using the research activity, innovation or development of professional skills;
- Ability to integrate knowledge, handle complex issues, develop solutions and make judgments in situations of limited or incomplete information, including reflections on the implications and ethical and social responsibilities that result from those solutions and those judgments;
- Communicating their outcomes, knowledge and arguments unambiguously.

Learning outcomes and competences

- Acquire knowledge in a particular area of Civil Engineering using the research activity, innovation or development of professional skills;
- Ability to integrate knowledge, handle complex issues, develop solutions and make judgments in situations of limited or incomplete information, including reflections on the implications and ethical and social responsibilities that result from those solutions and those judgments;
- Communicating their outcomes, knowledge and arguments clearly and unambiguously;
- Demonstrate knowledge of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) established by the United Nations, integrating sustainability principles into engineering practices. This includes identifying the dissertation's contribution to the environmental, social and economic aspects, as well as defining performance indicators that establish metrics to measure the impact of projects, with a view to a more sustainable and inclusive future.

Program

The dissertation program defines the objectives, the tasks and the schedule for the semester. The thesis supervisor proposes this program and should be approved by the Course Director after consulting the Scientific Committee.

DEMONSTRATION OF THE SYLLABUS COHERENCE WITH THE CURRICULAR UNIT'S OBJECTIVES:
The syllabus intends to complete specific training in the scientific area corresponding to the specialization and to present the latest developments. From a set of proposed work plans, which reflect the FEUP capabilities in this area, the work plan for each student will meet his profile and the availability of the resources, being proposed by the Supervisor and approved by the Director of the study cycle after consulting the Scientific Committee. Student supervision is provided by the supervisor, who is responsible for monitoring and guiding his progress. The result of the work done by each student is presented as a report with the first draft of the thesis and will be discussed in a public examination by a jury. If approved, the student will be sent the final version of the thesis immediately after the public discussion, considering the corrections specified by the jury.

Teaching methods and learning activities

The preparation of the thesis must be supervised by a faculty member or PhD researcher from the University of Porto or by a PhD or specialist of recognized merit by the Scientific Council of FEUP. The supervisor and, if it exists, the co-supervisor will be approved by the Course Director after consulting the Scientific Committee.

DEMONSTRATION OF THE COHERENCE BETWEEN THE TEACHING METHODOLOGIES AND THE LEARNING OUTCOMES:
With this curricular unit, students end the academic course. Therefore, it is intended that future professionals are highly qualified and endowed with knowledge and skills in their area of specialization. Thus, these professionals should be able to solve challenges and problems in a structured and rigorous and deal with multi-disciplinary civil engineering problems, framing them in the respective scientific-technical, economic, social and environmental contexts. They should also be able to communicate rationally the results of their work to the technical community and society in general enhance leadership skills, entrepreneurship and teamwork, considering the different economic and international competitiveness.

Eligibility for exams

At the end of the semester, a first draft of the dissertation will be submitted for discussion to a jury.

Calculation formula of final grade

The report with the first draft of the thesis is discussed in a public examination by a jury chaired by the Course Director, or his delegate, the supervisor or co-supervisor and a PhD teacher or PhD researcher specialist in the subject developed by the student. The final grade is calculated as an average of the individual grades awarded by each member of the jury.
