Objectives

The Research Labs Course allows the student to achieve academic skills with a specific laboratory work program. During the course they carry out, individually or in groups, activities integrated in a project in which Materials Engineering is one of the dominant themes. This integration fosters the creation of original research and innovation and the autonomous laboratory work capacity.

Learning outcomes and competences

The course induces an improvement of some advanced techniques of microstructural and mechanical characterization and, although the UC is predominantly of laboratory practices, it implies the mastery of specific areas of knowledge that can only be achieved through a thorough study of the subject.

The course fosters teamwork, personal accountability, mastery of scientific communication techniques, assimilation of processes, practices and methodologies associated with scientific research and critical analysis.

This course also aims to prepare the student for the Dissertation.

Working method

Presencial

Program

Each student develops a work selected from a series of topics proposed by the faculty. This work is fundamentally an experimental work integrated in an R&D project. As a general guideline, the distributed works should be resolvable within three months, so that the written report, to which they will be required, can be presented publicly at the course “congress” to be held at the end of the semester.

A training in “Experiment Planning” is also taught.

Mandatory literature

Several; There is no general bibliography. The bibliography depends on each topic to be developed.

Teaching methods and learning activities

This course is organized as a set of experimental works supervised by faculty who coordinate research and development work in the field of materials. This involvement in already formed teams is an efficient way to introduce students to the research dynamics and the individual responsibility of shared work.

Classes consist of laboratory work supervised by a doctor and accompanied by the teacher. Students, organized in groups or individually, investigate one of the topics proposed at the beginning of the semester and prepare biweekly interim reports, a final report in the form of an article, and an oral presentation to the course congress.

The research work will be developed at the University of Porto.

Evaluation Type

Distributed evaluation without final exam

Assessment Components

Designation Weight (%)
Participação presencial 0,00
Apresentação/discussão de um trabalho científico 40,00
Trabalho escrito 40,00
Trabalho laboratorial 20,00
Total: 100,00

Amount of time allocated to each course unit

Designation Time (hours)
Apresentação/discussão de um trabalho científico 23,00
Estudo autónomo 50,00
Frequência das aulas 39,00
Trabalho de investigação 50,00
Total: 162,00

Eligibility for exams

Attendance of laboratory classes according to FEUP rules.

Calculation formula of final grade

The assessment is based on the quality of the interim reports (20), final report (40%) and oral presentation (40%). In the final grade is considered the evaluation of the teacher and the team of supervisors.

Special assessment (TE, DA, ...)

A research work, similar to that of most students, must be carried out and presented by the student.

Classification improvement

Npt applicable.
