Provide students with an overview of product development methodologies for the design of products with moderate complexity, following a comprehensive approach from the design of products to their production.
It is expected to endow the students with skills to:
- Generate solids and complex surfaces using product development software (Solidworks).
- Analyze forces and tensions, as well as their relationship with the shapes specified (including thickness and size) and the materials selected.
- Evaluate the structural integrity of products based on their design using finite elements models.
- Identify manufacturing processes appropriate to the parts designed
- Identify the potential need to develop molds and/or tools appropriate to the production of the parts. Particular attention will be given to the rapid prototyping manufacturing method.
Mechanics: statics and dynamics. Solid mechanics. Materials. Manufacturing Processes. Industrial Drawing. Computer Added Design and Manufacturing.
- Methodologies for Product development and project of components.
- Use of software (Unigraphics NX) for product development.
- Selection of materials and manufacturing processes compatible with the characteristics intended for the products.
- Three-dimensional design of the products to be manufactured.
- Production of parts by rapid prototyping.
The theoretical classes expose in detailed the course syllabus, which is complemented with the analysis of relevant application examples. Students are expected to analyze problems in practical classes, and solve the exercises proposed using computer software. The project work is proposed in the first sessions of the course. Throughout the semester, students are guided in order to integrate the information acquainted in the course, allowing a robust product development exercise. The analysis of the structural integrity of the product, including stress and strain analysis, and the selection of materials and manufacturing processes are issues discussed in practical classes.

Students have to attend classes (according to the "General Evaluation Rules" of FEUP Pedagogical Council).
Student must necessarily participate in all evaluation components:
- Test done during the semester (with a minimum score of 7 points out of 20)
- Project Work (with a minimum score of 10 points out of 20)
The final grade will result from the weighted average of the marks obtained in each of the evaluation components, with the following weights: Test: 30% and project work: 70%.Through individual performance within the team, there is the possibility to differentiate the grade obtained in the project work of each student between -1 and +1.
Given the specific features of this curricular unit, the exam of appeal relates only to the classification obtained in the Test done during the semester.
Students with special status (student union leaders and high-level competition athletes) can opt to be assessed as normal students, according to the rules previously described. Alternatively, they can take the final exam at the period especially designed for students with special status. In this case, the weight of the exam remains equal to 30% and the weight of the group work equal to 70%
