Objectives

Critical knowledge of the state-of-the-art of the research theme to be addressed in the PhD Thesis.

Capacity to identify an open question and design, under supervision, a research plan to answer it.

Learning outcomes and competences

Skills for the articulation of the state of the art themes for the research area to be developed. Critical ability to develop a research problem, maintaining the orientation from its formulation to the presentation of possible ways to solve it.

Working method

Presencial

Program

The specific theme that identifies and responds to the needs of production, research, development, and innovation of industrial and academic actors of the national and global Physics Engineering community.

The monograph will develop the state-of-the-art and propose the methodology, framework, and work plan of the research & development to be conducted in the subsequent years of the Doctoral Programme.

The monograph could include the following structure (a detailed template is available):

1. State-of-the-art

2. Research goals and step forward

3. Research methods (optional)

4. Research Impact

5. Thesis plan and environment

Mandatory literature

Wayne C. Booth, Gregory G. Colomb, Joseph M. Williams; The Craft of Research, University Of Chicago Press, 2008. ISBN: 9780226065663

Complementary Bibliography

National Academy of Sciences; National Academy of Engineering; Institute of Medicine; Committee on Science, Engineering, and Public Policy; On Being a Scientist: A Guide to Responsible Conduct in Research, National Academies Press, 2009. ISBN: 9780309119702 (Free copy can be downloaded from NAP website)

Comments from the literature

Specific bibliography relevant to each PhD thesis theme, including e.g. advanced monographs, information servers, patents, refereed conference proceedings and journals.

Teaching methods and learning activities

Lectures (TP classes) address the general aspects of the course and include Seminars in Engineering Physics from experts, or attending relevant events (schools/workshops) for the ESR training.

In the tutorial classes, the student will conduct, under the supervision, the state-of-the-art of the research field, as well as to identify the research objectives and a credible plan to attain them.

The supervision and general theme of research are of critical importance in this curricular unit and the future thesis. It is the ESR responsibility to select the supervisor and general theme.

The evaluation takes into account the monography text and the oral presentation, each with a 50% weight in the final mark. Any plagiarism or serious ethical breach will result in failing this course and will be reported.
