Objectives

Individual project work aimed at the integration and application of knowledge, skills and attitudes acquired throughout the course, in the fluid and energy field. The work will take place in FEUP or Research Institution or in a business environment, promoting the development of initiative, decision-making and individual or group work.

Ability to analyse new situations, collect pertinent information, select methodologies to approach and solve the proposed problem. Ability to synthesize, extract conclusions and discussion of results.

More in-depth knowledge of a given topic in the area of Fluids and Energy.

Computer Skills

It depends on the subject of the dissertation

Experimental Skills

It depends on the subject of the dissertation

Transversal Competencies

Report writing

Public presentation and defence of a work

Learning outcomes and competences

The student must have, in the future the skills to independently develop a research or project in the area of energy.

Working method

Presencial

Pre-requirements (prior knowledge) and co-requirements (common knowledge)

Thermodynamics I and II, Fluid Mechanics I and II and Heat Transfer.

Program

The project is carried out on a full-time basis, following a previously defined individual work program.

The project lasts about 20 weeks (30 ECTS - 810 hours) involving the following general tasks:

- Detailed definition of the problem to be analyzed

- Bibliographic research

- Theoretical study or conception of a solution to a problem

- Numerical validation or development and construction of an execution project

- Preparation of the synthesis report

- Final public presentation before a jury

The project will have an advisor appointed by FEUP and may have a supervisor of the project host institution, company or organization dedicated to research. It is also possible to carry out the project within a research unit of FEUP.

Teaching methods and learning activities

According to what have been defined, the different stages of the project will be oriented by an academic supervisor.

The completion of the dissertation during the semester, as stated in the syllabus, allows students to contact and work on topics that require the development of knowledge, skills and competences, in line with those included in the learning objectives. Only in this way can the student prepare the report and defend it publicly.

Evaluation Type

Evaluation with final exam

Assessment Components

Designation Weight (%)
Defesa pública de dissertação, de relatório de projeto ou estágio, ou de tese 100,00
Total: 100,00

Amount of time allocated to each course unit

Designation Time (hours)
Elaboração de projeto 700,00
Elaboração de relatório/dissertação/tese 50,00
Trabalho de investigação 25,00
Trabalho laboratorial 25,00
Total: 800,00

Eligibility for exams

The frequency assumes the following:

The presence in the periodic meetings of work with the supervisor;

Presence in the place indicated by the supervisor to carry out the work.

The project must take place in exclusivity.

Calculation formula of final grade

Technical and scientific quality of work, 50%

Quality of the dissertation document, 35%

Quality of presentation and public discussion, 15%

- A mark from 10 to 12 out of 20 represents a work which complexity is low, where only minimum objectives were reached; - A mark from 13 to 15 out of 20 represents a work which complexity is medium, where all objectives were reached in an autonomous way; - A mark from 16 to 17 out of 20 represents a very good work which complexity is high, where all objectives were reached or surpassed with an high level of autonomy; - A mark of 18 out of 20 represents an excellent work that is presented and defended outstandingly, with a very well structured report, concise and complete and with an high level of autonomy and performance that was noticed by the academic supervisor(s); - Marks above 18 out of 20 should have an extraordinary character and should only be given to students who have reached an outstanding level in all of the items of assessment and that have presented innovative solutions. The mark should be unanimously given and a document should be attached to it and signed by all of the members of the Panel in order to justify the decision.
