JUSTIFICATION:
Urban planning is an area of intervention of the planners of the territory, having an associated set of theoretical elements and tools for planning and management.
It is understood that the challenge posed to potential planning professionals - as the recipients of this discipline - is the ability to call for such knowledge to an active and empowered in the process of construction (collective) from the city.
OBJECTIVES:
Provide training in planning, urban policies and urban regeneration.
Promote understanding of the nature of the main urban problems and challenges.
Present methods and instruments of urban policy.
SKILLS AND LEARNING RESULTS:
Knowledge: Identify the current practices and action models of urban planning and urban policy.
Application: Use methods and techniques of observation and analysis of problems of urban space: Identify sources of information relevant to the knowledge of urban issues in Portugal and the European Union.
Analysis: Develop analytical capabilities compared to other models of intervention in urban planning.
Summary: To analyze the various types of intervention and its contextual nature.
Rating: Discuss and develop methodologies for evaluating plans and policies.
Project: Develop proposals for action at urban and metropolitan scale.
Theoretical Program:
1. Presentation of the Discipline Program. Objectives. Assessment Method.Nature of theoretical and practical work. Scheduling tasks.
2.Intodução. Urban policies: general framework. Urban change and urban problems.
3. Urban policies and the institutional framework: institutions and urban governance.
4. The diversified nature of urban policies. The different initiatives and instruments.
5. Understanding the interventions. The diverse nature of the problems; types of urban problems and their contexts. Urban policies in Portugal.
6. Urban policies and urban regeneration: contexts, strategies and instruments. Urban regeneration in Portugal: the main initiatives and legislative instruments, their characteristics and capacity for intervention.
7. Analysis and critical discussion of case studies.
8. Conclusion of the course.
Theoretical-practical program:
Theme 1: Analysis of urban problems, using specific indicators for the spatial context of the metropolitan area of Porto.
Theme 2: Urban regeneration: the definition of a Strategic Intervention Program for specific urban areas.
Presentation and discussion of the outcomes.

DEMONSTRATION OF THE SYLLABUS COHERENCE WITH THE CURRICULAR UNIT'S OBJECTIVES:
Urban planning is an area of intervention of the planners of the territory, having an associated set of theoretical elements and tools for planning and management. It is understood that the challenge posed to potential planning professionals - as the recipients of this discipline - is the ability to call for such knowledge to an active and empowered in the process of construction (collective) from the city.
The teaching will consist of theoretical classes, with a predominantly explanatory nature, and in theoretical and practical classes, with group work.
DEMONSTRATION OF THE COHERENCE BETWEEN THE TEACHING METHODOLOGIES AND THE LEARNING OUTCOMES:
Use methods and techniques of observation and analysis of problems of urban space: Identify sources of information relevant to the knowledge of urban issues in Portugal and the European Union. Develop analytical capabilities compared to other models of intervention in urban planning. To analyze the various types of intervention and its contextual nature. Achieving final classification requires compliance with attendance at the course unit, according to the MIEC assessment rules. It is considered that students meet the attendance requirements if, having been regularly enrolled, the number of absences of 25% for each of the classes’ types is not exceeded.
Final exam/theoretical monograph: 60% Theoretical and Practical work in groups: 40%
Special evaluation (TE, DA,...): Final exam / individual Monograph Mobility students: Evaluation by exam and / or work (s) defined in accordance with the student profile.
