Spatial Planning, Transport Infrastructures and Environment Division

Acronym: SPTITA
Head: Sara Cruz
Description: The Territorial Planning, Transport Infrastructures and Environment Division (SPTITA) is responsible for pedagogical coordination in the disciplinary subareas of Spatial Planning and Environment and of Communication Routes and Transports, providing basic training in various Curricular Units (UCs) of the Bachelor's, Master's and PhD programmes in the Department of Civil Engineering and Geo-Resources (DECG), as well as collaborating in UCs of other Cycles of Studies. More specifically, SPTITA teaches UCs on the following courses:

- At undergraduate level: Degree in Civil Engineering (LEC) and Degree in Environmental Engineering (LEA);

- At master's level: Master's in Civil Engineering (MEC) in the scientific branch of Territorial Planning and Transport, Master's in Environmental Engineering (MEA), Master's in Transports Engineering (MET), Master's in Urban Planning and Design (MPPU) in partnership with the Faculty of Architecture of the University of Porto, and Master's in Occupational Health and Safety Engineering (MESHO).

- At doctoral level: Doctoral Programme in Territorial Planning (PDPT), Doctoral Programme in Civil Engineering (PRODEC), Doctoral Programme in Environmental Engineering (PDEA), the Doctoral Program in Transport Systems (PDST) and Doctoral Program in Occupational Safety and Health (PDSSO).

These programmes address issues related to urban and regional planning, transport and mobility planning, road design and management, planning systems and instruments, urban space management, and the urban environment.

In scientific terms, members of SPTITA promote and develop fundamental and applied research into the problems associated with the complex processes of territorial transformation (in particular, cities), the uneven evolution of territories, the challenges of increasing digitalisation, environmental qualification, and the minimisation and impacts of climate change. In terms of the transport system, SPTITA carries out research in a multidisciplinary area, including infrastructure, road safety including the human-machine interface, supported by driving simulators, and traffic management. This research is often carried out in conjunction with the Research Centre for Territorial, Transport and Environmental - CITTA and the Institute of R&D in Structures and Construction - CONSCTRUT.

In addition to teaching and research, SPTITA members collaborate in providing consultancy services to public and private organisations, supported by the Territorial Planning and Transport Laboratory - LPPT.
