Objectives

To understand the mechanisms and modes of heat transfer and to identify the corresponding governing fundamental equations. The focus is on the comprehension of the physical phenomena, its mathematical modelling and corresponding hypothesys and limitations.

Learning outcomes and competences

Competences: to be able to perform qualitative and quantitative analyses in cases where relatively simple analytical solutions or correlations exist. To use quantitative analysis in design situations, through the use of appropriate calculation methods.

Results: ability to use the knowledge in the design of engineering thermal systems, valuing the approach to energy conversion processes and opportunities for the efficient and environmentally-friendly use of thermal energy.

Working method

Presencial

Pre-requirements (prior knowledge) and co-requirements (common knowledge)

Solid knowledge on Mathematics and Algebra, Thermodynamics, Fluid Mechanics, Numerical Analysis.
Good understanding of differential equations and their integration.

Program

1. Introduction to Heat Transfer mechanisms and modes

2. Conduction: steady one-dimensional conduction, fins and unsteady one-dimensional conduction

3. Convection: forced, natural and with phase change

4. Heat exchangers

Evaluation Type

Distributed evaluation with final exam

Assessment Components

Designation Weight (%)
Teste 100,00
Total: 100,00

Amount of time allocated to each course unit

Designation Time (hours)
Estudo autónomo 108,00
Frequência das aulas 54,00
Total: 162,00

Eligibility for exams

All students duly registered will obtain frequency if attaining the minimum legal number of presences in the classes (pratical and laboratory sessions).

Calculation formula of final grade

Distributed evaluation with final exam.

Two mini-tests during the semeste, each with a weight of 50% for the final mark.

The resit exam is a single event covering all subject matter and worth 100% for the final mark. Evaluation for students with a special status, working students, etc, is a single event covering all subject matter and worth 100% for the final mark.

Note 1: All exams/papers are exclusively in portuguese, that is, no english version (or in any other language)of the exams/papers  will be provided.

Note 2: Students may not have smartphones, mobile phones, tablets or computers during the tests/exams. They may not also have other material beyond the exam paper and forms provided by the vigilants at the beginning of the exam. The use or presence on the table of any such device, or un-authorized material, is enough for the evaluation to be cancelled.

Examinations or Special Assignments

None.

Internship work/project

None.

Special assessment (TE, DA, ...)

Same system as for the resit exam.

Classification improvement

Same system as for the resit exam.
