Objectives

The main objectives of this course are:

I) To transmit to the students the capacity to handle geometric and non-geometric information in the production area.

II) The development of standardization concepts in Mechanical Engineering Drawing: First approach to conception drawing and introduction to the functional analysis of mechanical systems, through the study of their assembly drawings and the detail drawing of some of their components.

III) To identify and use the diverse characteristics inherent to drafting programs (CAD), numerical controlled machines (CNC) and manufacturing systems (CAM).

IV) To implement computer programs that allow the processing of the information retrieved from CAD/CAM/CNC software.

Learning outcomes and competences

By the end of the semester, the students should:

1) Be acquainted with CAD/CAM/CNC systems;

2) To know concepts on standardization in Mechanical Engineering Drawing;

3) To understand of the functional work of mechanisms from the study of their assembly drawings;

4) Be capable of design a definition drawing or an assembly drawing using CAD systems;

5) Be able to create three-dimensional components of mechanical systems and be capable of assembling them using CAD systems;

6) Be able to obtain definition and assembly drawings from mechanical systems, or one of their components, previously created using CAD systems;

7) Be acquainted with the main concepts of numerical command systems (CNC) and associated machine tools;

8) Know how to develop numerical command programs for milling and turning (CNC) machines;

9) Know how to develop computer programs to process information of CAD/CAM systems.

Geometrical product specification: geometrical tolerancing, general tolerances; indication of surface texture, specification and interpretation of geometrical tolerances. Mechanical systems and components for general use: screw threads, bolts, screws and nuts, washers, pins, circlips and retaining rings, rivets, welding, shafts, splines, keys and keyways, rolling bearings, seals for dynamic application, springs and gears. Assembly drawings and detail drawings.

3) Computer aided manufacturing systems (CAM): basic principles, manual and automatic programming of Numeric Controlled (CNC) machine tools.

4) Drawing-design, drawing-analysis and drawing-manufacturing computer interfaces.

Teaching methods and learning activities

The expected functioning of the course is as follows:

- Exposition of the different themes in the theoretical classes with the analysis of several examples. During these classes, several possibilities will be suggested for the practical assignments to be developed by the students.

- In the practical classes, some particularities will be presented and practical exercises suggested in order to apply the concepts presented in the theoretical classes.

- The last classes of the course are reserved for a more intense support to the practical assignments as well as their analysis and discussion.

Due to COVID-19, classes are taking place through the ZOOM platform.

Eligibility for exams

To complete this course, the students must attain the required frequency of the practical classes.

The students must also undergo all components of evaluation: written exam (CAD2D/3D +  Geometrical product specification + Mechanical systems and components for general use + CNC + CAD/CAM interfaces programming), delivery of the practical assignment, and presentation and discussion of the practical assignment.

Calculation formula of final grade

The final classification of the course results from the grades obtained in each of the evaluation components, using the following weights:

- Written exam: 50%, a classification superior or equal than 30/100% is required.

- Practical Assignment: 50%.

Examinations or Special Assignments

Not applicable.

Internship work/project

With regard to the expected practical works, the students, individually or in groups of two students, should define the theme of their work and propose it to the professors that should validate the proposal. The process of defining the practical work ends on a date to be announced in the beginning of the semester.

The final version of the practical work should be delivered to the professors up to date to be announced in the beginning of the semester, two values are subtracted from the final grade for each week of delay (up to a maximum of 2 weeks delay, after which the work is not accepted).

Special assessment (TE, DA, ...)

According to the number 7 of the Article 6 of General Evaluation Rules of FEUP, the students will be called to do a written examination (on all contents of the course), a practical assignment and a possible practical CAD exam.

Classification improvement

According to Article 10 of General Evaluation Rules of FEUP.
