Introduction of the concept of standardization in general and of its importance in Engineering. Acquisition of deep knowledge about the representation of the nominal shape and size of objects. Development of spatial visualization and technical communication skills. Introduction to the concepts of tolerance and interchangeability. Acquisition of basic knowledge about surface development methods. Introduction to diagrammatic drawings.
PERCENTUAL DISTRIBUTION Estimated percentual distribution for the scientific and technological contents: - Scientific component: 30 %. - Technological component: 70 %.
At the end of the course, the students shall be able to: 1) Make drawings of objects in orthographic representation and with nominal dimensioning. 2) Read drawings of objects in orthographic representation and make the correspondent pictorial representations (isometric drawings). 3) Interpret the meaning of the dimensional tolerances inscribed in drawings and determine the ISO fits that fulfils the design requirements previously established. 4) Identify different standardized mechanical components present in some mechanical systems for general use; know their representation in assembly drawings and the accomplished elementary mechanical functions
STANDARDIZATION in general and in technical drawing. Drawing media and equipment, lines and lettering. Types of projection systems. Short references to the dihedric method. ORTHOGRAPHIC REPRESENTATIONS: basic conventions for views, the choice of views, partial views, auxiliary views, cuts and sections. The reading of orthographic drawings. AXONOMETRIC REPRESENTATIONS: pictorial representations (isometric drawings). DIMENSIONING: general principles, methods of execution, special indications and preferred numbers. DIMENSIONAL TOLERANCING: ISO system of limits and fits, general tolerances. DIMENSIONAL AND GEOMETRICAL PRODUCT SPECIFICATIONS AND VERIFICATION: dimensional (ISO system of limits and fits, general tolerances) and geometrical tolerancing (individual and general tolerances), surface texture; fundamental tolerancing principle (principle of independency, envelope requirement, maximum material principle). MECHANICAL SYSTEMS AND COMPONENTS FOR GENERAL USE: screw threads, bolts, screws and nuts, washers.
Theoretical classes: detailed presentation of concepts related with the programme topics with help of practical examples. Tutorial classes: students are asked to execute multview drawing objects, including views and general dimensioning, and isometric drawings of objects represented by multiview drawings, included in the text produced by teachers of the SDI/DEMEGI/FEUP.

To attain frequency the student must not exceed the absence limit of practical classes (25% of the number of classes foreseen (P)).
Final Classification =0.9*Individual assessment (3 parts)+0.1*Home work and lessons (4 works)
Individual assessment=35% for each of the first and seccond mini-test classification and 30% for the third classification.
Home work and lessons
Work 1=10%
Work 2=20%
Work 3=35%
Work 4=35%
A minimum of 6 points in 20 in each one of the mini-test will be need.
Students dismissed from frequency will be subjected to examination in the period for mark improvement, according to art. 12 and art 10 point 1.
Mark improvement will be in accordance with Art 10.
Students may repeat two (2) of the three (3) mini-test if the minimum mark is not reached, or missed one or more mini-tests.
