Teaching language

Suitable for English-speaking students

Objectives

Objective: Present electromagnetism as a unifying model of many phenomena which are observed in nature and used in the technologies.

Learning outcomes and competences

Skills and learning outcomes

- Problem solving skills, acquaintance with the mathematical tools and the mathematical language used in electromagnetism and subsequent courses.

- Physical intuition and conceptual problem solving skills in electromagnetism.

- Capacity to undertake laboratory experiences using electric quantities measuring aparatus, to analyse the collecte data, discuss it and draw conclusions.

- Team work skills, the capacity and discipline to work continuously during the semester and an attitude of respect of ethical values, for example respect for colleagues and honesty.

Working method

Presencial

Pre-requirements (prior knowledge) and co-requirements (common knowledge)

It is assumed that the students have assimilated the contents of the curricular units Physics I and Mathematical Analysis II.

Program

  1. Charge, voltage and electric current

  2. DC Circuits

  3. First order and second order circuits.

  4. AC circuits.

  5. Electric field

  6. Magnetic field

  7. Electrodynamics

  8. Electromagnetic energy

  9. Electromagnetics in matter (if time permits)

Teaching methods and learning activities

In this course no distinction is made between lecture and recitation classes.

Lectures/recitation classes:
presentation by the lecturer of concepts; their illustration by solving key problems; problem solving by students under the supervision of the lecturer; laboratory experiments.

Moodle site:
power-point presentations of the lectures, multimedia resources, problem sheets, self-evaluation tests, general information of the course and evaluation results.

Office hours:
personalized tutorship where doubts on the theory and applications are clarified.

Evaluation Type

Distributed evaluation without final exam

Assessment Components

Designation Weight (%)
Teste 50,00
Trabalho laboratorial 50,00
Total: 100,00

Amount of time allocated to each course unit

Designation Time (hours)
Estudo autónomo 109,00
Total: 109,00

Eligibility for exams

Students with a previous inscription in the course obtain frequency if:

- Obtain a mark of 10 valores in the laboratory component.

- The laboratory mark (is larger than 10) is the one of the previous year.

Students with a first inscription in the course obtain frequency if:

- Do not miss more than 7 recitation classes;

- Obtain a mark of 10 valores in the laboratory component.

Students without frequency cannot pass the "recurso exam".

Calculation formula of final grade

The evaluation consists in:

- TI: mid-term test;

- TF: final test;

- L1, L2; two labs in pre-defined dates.

The final mark NF is given by the formula

If (TI and TF >= 7) then NF=(TI+TF+L1+L2)/4;

If (TI or TF < 7) then NF=min( (TI+TF+L1+L2)/4 , 10 valores);

Students with NF > 16 might have to pass a special oral examination: POC. For these cases the final mark is max(16, POC).

Examinations or Special Assignments

n.a.

Internship work/project

n.a.

Special assessment (TE, DA, ...)

For the students that during the present academic year have a working student or military statute both the frequency conditions and obligatory distributed evaluation are optional. The students in the conditions described above and that have decided to opt out from the distributed evaluation scheme or decided not to use the previous academic year distributed evaluation mark are admitted to the recurso exam with the final mark given by the exam mark. The recurso exame might have a laboratory component.

The students with the “dirigente associativo” statute cannot opt out from the distributed evaluation scheme.

Non-portuguese speaking students will follow a tutorial regime (i.e. the standard classes will be given in Portuguese, studets will use the office hours for follow-up). The individual evaluation moments (intermediate test, final test, individual laboratory tests, recurso exam) will be substituted with oral examinations. The group laboratory component of the final mark will be kept.

Classification improvement

Through the “Recurso” exam, which might include a laboratory component.

Observations

Office hours: Monday, 9h00-10h30 and 12h30-14h00, office I113.

It is expected that students dedicate 4 to 6 hours of weekly study to the course, further to the normal attendance to the theoretical and recitation lectures.

Those students who have not attended a distributed evaluation test and have a justification accepted by the DEM/DEMM secretariat can do an extra test.

Any fraud attempt during the distributed evaluation process will lead to loss of frequency and non-admission to the recurso exam.
