Objectives

In this UC the students do laboratory practice on what they have learned previously in their MIEQ and they learn basic notions of electricity. The UC has two components: Chemical Engineering “EQ” (3 h/week) and “Eletro” (2 h/week).

 (A)”EQ”

Laboratory practice on Mass Transfer and Separation Processes and also some Heat transfer and Fluid flow. The laboratory classes “EQ” alternate (week on/week off) with “Eletro” laboratory classes.

(B)”Eletro”

Basic experiments with devices that rely on electrical and magnetical phenomena and analysis of simple circuits (DC and AC)

Learning outcomes and competences

The students get in touch with physical phenomena and simple physicochemical processes, at experimental level and develop skills of communication, both oral and written, of the results of their analysis.

They also learn basic concepts of electricity and magnetism and their practical application.

Working method

Presencial

Program

 (A)”EQ”

The students perform six/seven laboratory ‘set’ works in the general areas of M.Transfer, Sep. Processes, Fluid Flow and Heat Transfer. Examples are:

        1-Equilibrium “gas-dissolved gas” with emphasis on “oxygen – dissolved oxygen (in water)”

2- Experimental measurementt of KLA by the dynamic method;
3- Experimental measurementt of KLA in bubbling ponds operating in parallel;
4- Vapour- liquid equilibrium and boiliing temperature of binary mixtures;
5- Test of a simple nummerical model for batch distillation of a binary mixture;
6- Experimental distillation of a binary mixture;
7- Continuous distillation at total reflux;
8- Continuous evaporation of water in a large confined space;
9– Continuous renovation of gas inside a process vessel (limiting models);
10- Filtration at constant pressure;
11– Homogeneous and heterogeneous fluidization;
12– Heating/cooling of liquid in a tank with a coil.

(B)”Eletro”

Set of lectures to consolidate material from FísicaII, coupled with six laboratory classes on:

1- Measurement of electric tension, current and power;

2- Elements in series and in parallel;

3- DC circuits;

4- AC circuits;

5- Magnetic field and magnetic strength;

6- Electromagnetic induction

Teaching methods and learning activities

“EQ”

Each group of two students performs the experimental work, writes a short report on it and discusses it with the teacher.

“Eletro”

In the lecture theater the teacher explains the basic mode of functioning of simple electric devices, used at home, in the lab and in industry, detailing the electric and electromagnetic on which their operation is based.

In the lab students perform their work in groups of two and write a simple report on the work.
