Objectives

The global aim is to teach the theoretical physical principles necessary to analyse mechanical problems and introduce the general principle of Physics and Engineering in real problem analysis through the use of logic and simplifications. The strategy to consolidate the knowledge of Physics will be based on the resolution of Engineering problems applying physical principles, trigonometry, vector algebra and calculus (differentiation and integration), crucial to the qualification of the future engineers.
The specific aims are the learning of basic mechanical concepts, namely: force, momentum, mechanical equilibrium and conservation theorems(of energy, linear momentum and angular momentum). The students should get familiar with the application of vector algebra to statics, cinematics and dynamics.

Teaching methods and learning activities

Theoretical-Practical (TP) classes – Expositive classes where concepts and models are introduced.
Practical (P) classes – Tutorial and expositive classes where representative problems are discussed and solved. Proposed problems resolution by the students. Three Laboratory sessions along the semestre.

Eligibility for exams

- The student will not have frequency if his final continuous classification (distributed evaluation) is less than 3.0 (in 7).
- Independently of student’s last continuous classification, if the student is obliged to have frequency to the discipline, he should not exceed the absence limit to the practical classes (25% of the number of previewed classes). Otherwise the student will not be allowed to the final exam.
- Students who, in previous years, were inscribed in the discipline are not obliged to have frequency in practical classes.

Calculation formula of final grade

1 - New students :

CF = EF + AD

CF (0 - 20 valores) – Final classification
EF (0 - 13 valores) – final exam
AD (0 – 7 valores) – continous classification

where

AD = (TPL + Q + P)

TPL (0 – 4,5 valores) – Laboratory work
Q (0 - 1,5 valores) – multiple choise quiz questions
P (0 - 1,0) - solved problem

2 – "old" students ( 2007/2008) :

CF = EF + AD08

CF – final classification (0-20 valores)
EF – final exam (0-13 valores)
AD08 - (0 – 7 valores) – continous classification (2007/2008)

Classification improvement

Classification improvement can be done in the re-sit examination period, accordingly to the rules.
