Objectives

The embankments of transport infrastructure and dams are structures of great importance.

The design and construction of these structures require specific knowledge related to the characteristics of geomaterials, with loads applied to them, and the mechanisms that govern the operation of these structures.

Objectives:
Acquisition of knowledge about the selection of sites, construction materials and methods of design and construction of works in which the the embankments are important, in particular, transport infrastructure and dams.

Skills and Learning Outcomes:
Describe the main types of embankment dams;
Identify sites and materials suitable for the construction of embankments for transport infrastructure and dams.

Understand the designed and written elements that are part of a structural design of a landfill, explain the functions of each structural element in an embankment.

Design an embankment including the support layers of the superstructure (transportation infrastructure) and the particular elements of a cross-section of an embankment dam.

Alternatives in terms of solutions and construction materials for embankments.

Program

Embankments for transportation infrastructures.
Classification of fill and support layers materials.
Design.
Operations required for use.
Construction: procedure, types of equipment and conditions of use; construction site organization.
Soil stabilization: soil mixtures; treated soils; construction aspects of the treated soils.
Factors affecting the treatment with cement and lime and the mechanical properties of the treated soil.
Earth and rockfill dams. Typical embankment sections. Design considerations. Stability and seepage analyses: calculation procedures. Seepage control (drainage, filtration, protection).
Control of construction of earth and rockfill works: methods (laboratory and in situ), key quality indicators.
Instrumentation and monitoring of embankment works.

Teaching methods and learning activities

Sessions dedicated to the discussion of the concepts, theories and methods, with reference to real case studies.
Problems of transportation infrastructures design are proposed for solution.
One real project of an embankment dam is supplied for analysis and discussion, becoming the reference for a numerical study whereby the proposed dam design is checked using a commercial finite element software.

DEMONSTRATION OF THE COHERENCE BETWEEN THE TEACHING METHODOLOGIES AND THE LEARNING OUTCOMES:

Design an embankment including the support layers of the superstructure (transportation infrastructure) and the particular elements of a cross-section of an embankment dam. Alternatives in terms of solutions and construction materials for embankments.
