Objectives
Teaching some types of geotechnical structures. With that purpose, fundamental concepts of their working and the influence of the constructive methods are applied, in order to allow an adequate structural conception and design. Several methods of design, tested by practical experience, are considered, and some real cases analysed.
Program
Embankments on soft soils. Geotechnical characterization. Stability and behaviour analysis. Hydrodinamic and secondary settlements. Instrumentation and monitoring. Constructive techniques: Multi-stage construction; Temporal overload; Vertical drains; Lateral banquettes; Foundation reinforcement – geosynthetic, stone columns, jet-grouting. Effects on pile foundations of near structures – negative skin friction and lateral earth pressures. Technology of pile foundations. Analysis of real cases.
Lateral retaining structures in excavations. Structural types. Braced walls. Tieback constructions. Strut and anchor systems. Pile walls. Braced sheet piling. “Arch effect” and lateral earth pressures in braced excavation walls. Apparent lateral pressure diagrams. Instability due to heave of bottom of excavation in clayey strata. Pressures due to water and overloads. Design of braced excavation walls. Analysis of real cases.
