Objectives
This discipline applies previous acquired knowledge to the special case of bridges. Therefore, emphasis is given to synthesis, although analytical skills are further developed since specific concepts and methodologies mostly relevant for bridges are also taught.
It deals with the conception and design of bridges and their construction methods, construction quality control, monitoring, inspection, rehabilitation and reinforcement.
Specifically, it is aimed that students become able to develop and design highway bridges with spans up to 50 m and a total length up to around 150 m, and get a good knowledge of all construction methods in bridge construction.
Program
Generalities about bridges. Historical evolution of bridges and their structural materials and construction methods.
Design of a bridge. Design phases and their contents.
Design of the superstructure of a bridge: structural characteristics, structural behaviour, global analysis versus analysis of substructures and influence of the construction method. Design of supports: columns, abutments, bearings and foundations. Special bridges: curved bridges, skew bridges, suspension bridges and cable stayed bridges.
Site control and monitoring of bridges. Reception tests.
Inspection, maintenance, rehabilitation and reinforcement of bridges. Management and maintenance strategies.

Teaching methods and learning activities
In formal terms, the discipline is framed into “theoretical” and “tutorial” lectures, but the teaching, as a matter of fact, is organized in four distinct types of lectures: traditional lectures, designing tutorials, detailing tutorials and work site visits, with no superposition of subjects addressed in each lecture.
In traditional lectures conceptual and cultural subjects are taught, in designing tutorials structural elements are studied, in detailing tutorials all relevant details are drawn, and in work site visits all those points are discussed and confirmed.
Traditional lectures are backed by slides and videos.
