Structural and geotechnical Division

Acronym: SEG
Head: João Paulo Miranda Guedes
Description:

The Structures and Geotechnics Section (SEG) brings together faculty members, technical staff, and PhD researchers from the Department of Civil Engineering and Georesources who are involved in the study and teaching of mechanics, geomechanics, structures, and geotechnics.

Members of the SEG are responsible for teaching course units (CU) in the field of Basic Physics-Mechanics Sciences, as well as in the areas of Structures (analysis, design, safety verification, repair, and strengthening of structures) and Geotechnics (soil identification and characterisation, slope stability, embankments, foundations, retaining structures, dams, and underground works). These CU are part of the study plans for the Bachelor’s Degree (L.EC) and Master’s Degree (M.EC) in Civil Engineering, which includes a specialisation in Structures and Geotechnics. SEG members also teach the majority of CU in the Master’s Degree in Civil Engineering Structures (MESTEC) and several CU in the Doctoral Programme in Civil Engineering (PRODEC). Additionally, they contribute to teaching CU in other study cycles, specialisation programmes, and advanced studies at FEUP.

SEG members promote and develop fundamental and applied research of an analytical, numerical, and experimental nature, focusing on the static and dynamic behaviour (e.g., hydraulic, seismic, and wind actions), both linear and non-linear (material and geometric), of common and complex structures, as well as works in soil and rock masses, with or without structure-soil-structure interaction or interaction with other surrounding or involved material media. They are also dedicated to the study, analysis, and development of construction technologies for new structures and the strengthening of existing structures, including large-scale embankments and underground works.

The SEG is frequently called upon to provide specialised consultancy services to public and private entities.
