Objectives

- To deepen the concepts about the behavioural models and the design of concrete structures.
- To expose the methods and techniques of analysis, design and execution of special structures, namely the prestressed concrete ones.

Program

1. Models for the behaviour and design of concrete structures. Material properties. Behavioural models of structural members under tension and compression. Localized compression. Confined concrete. Design of walls, slabs and shells. Laboratory experimental tests.
2. Design of regions with discontinuities. Strut and tie models: analysis and geometry. Design and verification of the model nodes. Corbels. Deep beams.
3. Prestressed concrete structures. Prestress technology. Equivalent loads. Design of cross sections. Design of isostatic beams. Evaluation of prestress losses. Hyperstatic structures. Construction phasing.
4. Analysis and design of slabs. Types of slabs and behavioural performance. Methods for evaluating the internal forces. Flexural design. Punching. Slabs prestressed with unbounded tendons. Constructive provisions and detailing.

Teaching methods and learning activities

All the matters of the discipline are presented during theoretical classes, where the theories and models are introduced, together with the resolution of some representative practical exercises. The practical exercises to be solved by the students are discussed during practical classes.

Evaluation Type

Distributed evaluation with final exam

Eligibility for exams

A positive "classification of frequency" is attributed to the students that:
(i) Develop appropriately the application exercises proposed for the practical classes, and don´t exceed the allowed maximum number of lacks (25% of the practical classes).
(ii) Have obtained a positive "classification of frequency" in 2003/2004 or 2004/2005, and request it explicitly to the teachers of the discipline.

The application practical exercises consist on the resolution of a set of problems involving the many subjects of the discipline. Along the semester the works elaborated by the students should be provided to the teacher of the practical classes, which will promote their analysis and discussion. At the end of the semester the teacher of the practical classes will inform each student of the "classification of frequency".

On January 3, 2007, the "classification of frequency" will be published. Being this positive, and fulfilled the limit of lacks referred in (i), the student has frequency to the discipline, being allowed to perform the written examination.

Calculation formula of final grade

The final classification on the discipline is computed as the average of the "classification of frequency" and the "classification of the valid written examination" (the best of the written examinations according to the General Norms of Evaluation, with a minimum of 8 values on a scale of 20).

For the students, under particular conditions certified by the Secretary of DEC (working students, etc.) , that do not developed appropriately the application exercises proposed for the practical classes, they will have a final examination where they must have a minimum classification of 9,5 (on a scale of 20). The final classification may be complemented by an oral examination.

Examinations or Special Assignments

Practical exercises consisting on the resolution of a set of problems involving the many subjects of the discipline. Along the semester the works elaborated by the students should be provided to the teacher of the practical classes, which will promote their analysis and discussion.

Special assessment (TE, DA, ...)

For the students not formally complied to guarantee the "classification of frequency", under particular conditions certified by the Secretary of DEC (working students, etc.), elaboration of the practical works that are the basis of the "classification of frequency" is not compulsory. Accordingly, these students will be submitted to a written examination, where they must get a minimum of 9.5 values on a scale of 20. The final classification may be complemented by an oral examination.

SPECIAL RULES FOR MOBILITY STUDENTS:
Proficiency in Portuguese and/or English;
Previous attendance of introductory graduate courses in the scientific field addressed in this module;
Evaluation by exam and/or coursework(s) defined in accordance with student profile.
