Objectives

The plurality of aims to reach in this disciplines is essentially divided in two great groups.

First Group Aims - "Technician-Formatives".

Considering that students of Civil Engineering will be able to to develop in its professional passage sveral projects of specialties, specially building construction, such practical it will imply the necessity to efficiently articulate its solution to that one praised by architects and/or specialists. In this way, it is intended to:
a)Developing in students the capacity to read and to interpret different projects of architecture, being made familiar itself, thus, with the specific language of the drawing technical representation (already introduced previously in he disciplines of Drawing of Construction), support essential in the communication of the act to create the built structures and the spaces, in general;
b)Giving students the procedures / principles that structuralize the architecture projects (its prescribed constitution and hierarchy, fases, implications, joint to the municipal politicies on construction, etc), as well as for the effectiveness of the joint of the professional of civil engineering with the architects.

Second Group Aims - "Critical-Formatives".

During the last years the studies on theory, critical and historiography of architecture have been object of increasing attention. In this scientific context where the inquiries gain great expression on concrete analyses of historical periods in accordance with determined metodologies or points of view on theory, history and morphology of architecture, it is intended, as specific aims, to develop the following analytical boardings:
a)Assimilation of the passage of the architecture, in the interpretative domain of the historical evolution of the articulated architectural space to the constructive and structural innovations; critical and monographic;
b)Assimilation of main movements and workmanships of architecture (until nowadays), for form to extend, in the students, its cultural and architectural learning, as well as the education of the taste.

Program

Chapter I
1 - INTRODUCTION. Slight knowledge of SPACE, ARCHITECTURE, STRUCTURE and COMPOSITION. The Space and the Architecture. The elements of the space. Elementary spaces and generating spaces. The entity "vazio". The space protagonist of the architecture. Estimated dimensions and of the architecture. Some architectural terms.
2 - Reading and interpretation of drawings technician (ortogonais projecções), in different scales, for assimilating the representation codes of some architectural components: a)Elements that structuralize the technical representation (the line, the shade, the spot or mark);
b)The importance of the hierarchy of drawing lines and its meaning.
3 - Analytical method. The Architectural Project (hierarchy and fases). Legislation/rules.
Chapter II
1 - Architectural space through History. The Greek human scale. The static space of old Rome. The Christian space and the new human dimension. The directional acceleration of bizantine style. The Christianity. The gotic. Renaissance, baroque and mannerism. The architecture (and urbanism) from 1700. The main pombalinas and almadinas reforms, the architectural thought - the iluminism. The return to classicism. The XIXCentury: analysis of French, English and American case studies. Slight knowledge of "pitoresque" and "ecletism". The gotic revival, the medievalism, the romantism. The monuments as historical certifications and its paper inside the city. Modernity and vanguard; new proposals. The modern movement: genesis, rationalism, bureaucracy and utopias of "modernity". The Bauhaus and the Esprit Nouveau; the CIAM and the Letter of Athens. The post-modern architecture: the post-modern period - representation, symbolism and quality in architecture and urban public space.
2 - Brief references to Building Tipology : organizational concepts and nomenclature, projects.

Teaching methods and learning activities

Due to the nature of the issues and due to its theoretical texts, the lessons always will be supported, as much as possible, by technologies, like the projection of films from different authors or periods of architecture, contemplated in the program, as well as the projection of series of transparencies and other particular sources especially oriented for some of the issues (Analysis of the Arquitectonica Form, Typologies and Space Organization , Legislation, among others). Complementarily, students will be stimulated on the discussion of different questions according the thematics and issues of the program, promoting the debate inside lessons; however, in what concerns to the direct analysis of sites and constructions, some study visits will occur.
