Objectives

· Raise students’ awareness of issues related to the preservation of the quality of the Environment
· The nature of environmental and social impacts related to projects of Civil Engineering
· Introduction to the elaboration of EIS, the process of EIA and legal procedure in Portugal
· Methodologies of prediction and evaluation of environmental and social impacts; mitigation of impacts
· Discussion of the nature of environmental and social conflicts related to specific projects and presentation of methodologies to identify and solve those conflicts

PROGRAMME – Theoretical lectures
1. Introduction; Concepts of ESI (Environmental and Social Impacts)
2. Structure and methodology of the elaboration of EIS (Environmental Impact Statement)
3. Reference to the EIA Process and legal procedure in Portugal
4. Methodologies of impact prediction and assessment
5. Description of environmental and social impacts; Prediction, assessment and mitigation of impacts For each environmental or social component: – concepts, introduction to the techniques of prediction and mitigation of impacts. – examples of Civil Engineering projects with relevant impacts

5.5 Population, Employment and Housing

6. Public participation. Resolution of environmental and social conflicts.
