Objectives

To transmit to the students the capacity to handle geometric and non-geometric information in the production area. Development of standardization concepts in Mechanical Engineering Drawing. First approach to conception drawing. Introduction to the functional analysis of mechanical systems, through the reading of their assembly drawings and the detail drawing of some of their components. To implement computer programs that allow the processing of the information retrieved from commercial software. To identify and use the diverse characteristics inherent to the drafting programs and numerical control machines.

Program

CAD systems: their description and classification, their use in drafting and design, parametric drafting, 3D modelling. Standardization in mechanical engineering drawing. Geometrical product specification: geometrical tolerancing, general tolerances; indication of surface texture, specification and interpretation of geometrical tolerances. Mechanical systems and components for general use: screw threads, bolts, screws and nuts, washers, pins, circlips and retaining rings, rivets, welding, shafts, splines, keys and keyways, rolling bearings, seals for dynamic application, springs and gears. Assembly drawings and detail drawings. Drawing-design, drawing-analysis and drawing-manufacturing interfaces. Computer aided manufacturing: basic principles, manual and automatic programming of NC machine tools.

Teaching methods and learning activities

Exposition of the different themes in theoretical-practical classes with analysis of various examples. Several themes are suggested for practical assignments. To apply the concepts, in practical classes some particularities are presented and some exercises are suggested to be done on the computer. The last class of the semester is reserved for the presentations of the practical assignments done.

Eligibility for exams

To pass this course the students must attain frequency first. The students must submit themselves to the evaluation in all its components: three mini-tests written, presentation and delivery of a practical assignment.
Each practical assignment should be done by one or two students, and its theme should be proposed by the students and accepted by the teachers.

Calculation formula of final grade

The final classification of the course will be the result of a calculation with the grades obtained in each of the evaluation components, which weights are the following:

Evaluation in class: 60% (3 mini-tests written with equal contribution: CAD, Geometrical product specification + Mechanical systems and components for general use, CNC programming). Obs. a classification greater or equal then 30%, is necessary in two of the mini-tests.

Practical Assignment: 40% (including presentation of the work done)

Examinations or Special Assignments

Doesn’t apply.

Special assessment (TE, DA, ...)

On the special examination periods, the students that are dismissed from attending classes, accordingly to the terms of items a) and b) of number 3 of Article 4 of the General Evaluation Rules, will be called to do a theoretical exam (on the contents of the three mini-tests done during the semester), a practical assignment and a possible practical CAD examination.

Classification improvement

The grade improvement will be done according to Article 10 of the General Evaluation Rules of FEUP.
Students will be able to improve the practical work done, regarding 40% of the final classification, or to accomplish a written exam on the contents of the three mini-tests done during the semester, regarding the remaining 60% of the final classification.
