Objectives

1- Obtain the fundamental knowledge in physics, namely in electromagnetism, including circuits, radiation and optics, necessary either to explain natural phenomena and technological appliances and to analyze and solve problems in these subjects (CDIO 1.1.2).

(A detailed account of the learning outcomes may be found in the study guides available in Moodle@FEUP, http://moodle.fe.up.pt/).

2- Demonstrate perseverance in the independent study and analysis of the subjects, critical reasoning, awareness of the knowledge and skills in the subjects and curiosity in Physics, and science in general, particularly in the relation of Physics to Engineering (CDIO 2.4.2, 2.4.4, 2.4.5 e 2.4.6).

3- Practice the work in a team (CDIO 3.1.2) and written communication (CDIO 3.2.3).

(CDIO Syllabus in Topical Form v4.2.3)

Teaching methods and learning activities

Lectures/Recitation (TP): These lectures provide the main contact with the subject. The presentation of the subjects is oriented from phenomenology to the general models and laws, using everyday situations, experimental demonstrations whenever possible.
Methodology based on effective teaching.

Recitation classes (L): Dedicated to exercise solving, alone or in group, under teacher supervision and analysis experimental laboratory demosntrations.

Support: All the support to the course is available on Conteudos of Sifeup. The available material lecture notes, problem sheets to be used in exercise sessions, previous exams, etc..

Evaluation Type

Evaluation with final exam

Eligibility for exams

Admission to the final exam requires the attainment of frequency (General Evaluation Rules, "Normas Gerais de Avaliação").

To attain frequency a student must not miss more than the allowed number of classes (25%, General Grading Rules).

Students with special registration, namely working students, military, or students with frequency grade from a previous year, are excused from obtaining frequency again (General Grading Rules).

Calculation formula of final grade

Is given by the final exam.

Examinations or Special Assignments

Not planned.

Special assessment (TE, DA, ...)

By final exam, under the General Grading Rules.

Classification improvement

By final exam, under the General Grading Rules, the final mark being that of the exam.

Observations

The use of a formula sheet and a calculator are allowed in all activities of the course, including the final exam.
